GOOD ROADS CONVENTION. Small but Enthusiastic Crowd At- | tended the Record's Good Rodss . Convention- aT the Court House J Last Wednesday. Meeting Call- I ed for Second Saturday in Septem The Columbia Record's good roads party was not greeted by a large crowd alst Wednesday, but those who attended seemed to take a deep interest in the proceedings and were so much impressed by the talk of Mr. D. H. Winslow, u good roads expert sent out by the department of agriculture, that a temporary will be made for a meeting on the second Saturday in September and a permanent organization will be formed, to be known as the Good Roads league of Dillon county. The meeting was called to order in the Court House at 11 o'clock and Mr. E. R. Hamer was asked to preside. Mr. W. C. Moorman, of The Columbia Record, was introduced and explained the object of the meeting. The next speaker was Mr. D. H. Winslow, an expert sent out by the department of agriculture to assist in organizing a state wide good roads league, and Mr. Winslow made a most timely and interesting talk on the subject of good roads. Mr. Winslow has been engaged in. the construction of sand and clay roads for more than fifteen years and what he had to say on the subject was of great interest to his audience. It is a matter of regret that a larger crowd was not present. Wr. Winslow said at the beginning of his talk that he was not here to tell the neople they needed good roads. He said every community he had visited was aware of that fact, but he said the object of his visit was to tell the i people how badly they needed good roads and the best way to get them. This he proceeded to do In such a plain and practical manner that it was easy to follow him throughout hiB address. At the conclusion of Wr. Winslow's remarks it was decided to go Into a temporary organization and the following officers were elected: E. R. Hamer, president; A. J. C. Cottingham, vice-president, and A. M. Bethea, secretary and treasurer. The president was authorized to ap- ! point an execntlve committeeman fo ' each township and to call a meet- j ing of the citizens of the county on , the second Saturday in September 1 and organize a permanent association. The good roads party are touring the state in Brush automobiles furnished by the Gregory-Conder mule company of Columbia, and they will travel about 2,400 miles in visiting every county in the state. The trip will consume about two months and the expense of the campaign are being paid by The Columbia Record, with the exception of ?000 whirli wus il-inntpii hv the government to pay Mr, Winslows' expenses. The party came over from Marion and in the afternoon they left for Florence by way of Bennettsville and Chreaw. ?m ? ?
