Wal< jftuun or Elfin watch oheap; a new R- i^jfot $? * received. B Jk& Jordan. f s W. T. Bethea went to R&hmond |B 1 Monday on business. W Dr. J. R. Rogers and Mr. L. B. m9 Rogers have returned from a trip Q| to Atlanta. ||y. Messrs. P. A. Hodges and Ben B. Sellers are announced in this f, issue as candidates for congress. f E. L. He carried Frank, hoping that something I might be done for the little fellow's Eft paralyzed leg. The goverment has appointed IS C. W. McKerral, of Marion, andy1 p M. McG. Buck of Mullins, ap j lp/ commissioners to represent the dl^C lp?,V county in the settlement of claims B^Mlpder the act creating Dillon County. The commissioners for Jfe' the new county are W. T. Bethea ? and W. M. Hamer. Morris Fass has purchased from Dr. W . Stackhouse the building ? occupied by the Bank of Dillon. I i ne purcnase price was 57,tJOO.OO, which shows how rapid!y Dillon real estate has advanced in the past few years. As soon as the Bank moves into its new quarters Mr. Fass will convert the lower floor of the old building: into a store room which will be occupied by the Peoples Grocery. The best index to a town's . t growth is sound in its post office K receipts. The business at the poster office has grown so rapidly thai Jf k Postmaster Husbands has been\ |L forced to put in another tier of I lock boxes. The boxes are of the latest design and are an improve ; ment on the old boxes in that they | are opened by a combination lo>_k ?!< The postofficc receipts are now fi- ""about $7,000 per annum, independent of the receipts from the rural routes, and when Dillon reaches the $10,000 mark she will be in the eligible list for a governA ment building. There are now nearly 350 lock boxes in use. Battling Postmaster Husbands in his efforts to get mail through f . to Dillon over the N. & S. C. raill road the Chamber of Commerce can render the town, and particu> larly the territory through which the new road runs, an excellent service. The mail is carried no further than Clio, and althougn the postal authorities have been petitioned to bring mail on to Dillon, they seem to be somewhat slow in giving the petttion proper contsideration. Postmast-'r Husbands is doing what he can to facilitate matters wj0kffhe government, and he should be given a little assist, ance by the Chamber of Commerce. The readers of The Herald will St. learn with regret that Prof. W. W - Nickels has resigned as principal of the Dillon High schooi and will move to Greenwood where he has jF] accepted a similar position with ft the schools of that city. Prof, f, iNickelS makes this chance on no oount of the health himself and his family and is not induced byfinan' j. cial or other considerations to make this change. He has been in Dili Ion so long that he has become a part of the town ijpd in his leaving the town and the school suffer a ] distinct loss. He is that type of j. citizen will endure for many, many v 9 years to come. Tne best wishes I of all whose pleasure it is to know p .i him go *&1^ him to his adopted 1 home. The *V I noun< i counties in the district will each wt)ave two candidates seeking con?gifciSsional honors. It is under' stood that Darlington will have a v candidate in the field also in the , erson of Hon. Brown, and it is possible that Florence and Horry ,ifeach will put out a favorite; son ^or Mr. Ellerbe's seat. The race promises to be a wmrm one. Mr. a, Ellefbe has been very active in securing appropriations for his dis. , strict tflo the feet that he has re. ' 11.1 ii f ccntly secured a $50,000 appropri-. h; ation for a goyerment building at d< Bennettsville greatly strengths hisi position with the Marlboro people, j while the appropriations he has se- 1y cured for harbor improvements at Georgetown will make him the logical candidate of the < leorgetown people. The Methodist Sunday schools j of Dillon, Little Rock and Lattaj will run their annual excursion t<>! Wrightsvillc Beach on Thursday, June Oth. Arrangements have been made to carry a large crow.' and the children are looking t oward to the occasion with much pleasure. All Methodists and theiguests are invited to join the Sunday schools on this occasion a. every protection will be given the excursionists by the committee which will maintain perfect order and do everything in the" power to make the occasion as pleasant as possible.
