W TOTTER AND CONDUCTOI j| Jib Henry Bethea a Wei I Known Dillon Citizei W: KiHs Pullman Porter an I Conductor, o n Baltimor / I Ohio Train and is Hin r self Killed by the Polic and Posse of Citizens. Dillon was shocked to learn la< Wednesday night that Jonn Henr Bethea had shot to death a Pull man car porter and conductor o a Baltimore & Ohio train and wa himself killed by the police and posse of citizens at Wilmington Del- The first news of traged was received here at midnight ove the long distance telephone whe northern newspapers began mak ing enquiries about Mr. Bethea The several accounts of the terri ble tragedy varv somewhat in de tail and the limited space of Th Herald will not permit us to g;v more than a synopsis of the trag ic affair, but the substance c !t what is here given was learner from Rev- Wm. McLaurin. a cous in of Mr. Bethca's, who went t Wilmington for the bod v. Mr? Bethea left Dillon Tues dav night for John Hopkins, Ba timore, to have an operation pel formed for cancer of the stomach Before leaving he arranged hi buisiness affairs with Mr. W. 1 Bethea. as he seemed to heliov that he would not survive tl" operation. Wednesday inornin he arrived at John Hopkins an ft?- because the head surgeon had n< arrived he was not immediate received into the hospital. 1 V' became restless, left the hospit and bought a ticket for New Yor He left Baltimore Wednesday a ternoon over the Baltimore & Oh railroad. The officials at the st ? tion said he appeared to be som what nervous as he paced up at: down the station plattora Shortly after leaving Baltimore 1 went into the chair ear to stnoki The Pullman porter told him 1 could not smoke in that car. few minutes afterward Bethea <>; dered a drink of whiskey, an shortly afterwards ordered :.i other. Again the porter told hit he could not smoke in the chai car. Words followed, the portei it is said, using insolent language * Mr. Bethea made a lunge at tli porter and the two were sculllin f between the two glass doors whe Mr. Bethea shot him through th heart. The passengers bccam panic stricken. The conducio rushed up and addressed a rc mark to Mr. Bo the a. Mr. Bethe asked him it' he wanted to take th negroe's part. The conducts grappled with him. Reach in around Mr. Bethea placed his pis tol against the conductor's l>ou and shot him through the hear The porter and conductor wet killed intstantly. both of them fa ling in their tracks. T h e c: doors were locked and a messaj: was sent to the police at Wilminj ft ton, Del., 15 miles distant to be ; fS the station. When the train a rived Bethea had barricaded bin self in the closet. A pitched ba tp tie followed and tor an hour thea held up a score of jwlictme and half a thousand citizens. wp. Finally by means of a tire hoi Bethea was forced to vacate tl closet. He paced back and fori in two coaches and kept up tl battle. Finally he was driven i the olatform wherp 'oad of shot in the face- A not hi shot broke his right arm. hut 1 transferred his pistol to his le Wi- band and continued to fight. F this time he had been wounded half a dozen places. Finally ballet struck him in the region i Ufc, the heart and he toppled over in r officer's arms. Although helplc he was still conscious and on tl way to the hospital he begged f< his pistol, telling the officers th he yet had life enough in him Hi fisrht bis wav OUt. As hi* rr*?>?*hi the hospital door he died. The press dispatches seemed indicate that Bethea was insan but when he left Dillon he w; perfectly rational. The consen* ? sus of opinion is that he resented the insolence of the porter and that he became further enraged 1* whsn the conductor interferred. Having: gone so far he was deter uiiucu uui iu surrcnuer auu sacri[ ficed his life before he would com* 'C mit himself to the hands of stranj. gers. Those who knew him best are convinced that he was not a man who would wilfully and deliberately precipitate such a terrible tragedy, and the impression is that he was angered to the point of dcsperation. The body arrived Sunday night and was buried at Mt. Holly Sun day morning. Mr. Bethea had just disposed of his town property '' and leaves to his heirs a comforta* ble little estate. His tragic death r is greatly deplored by all who knew n him. To Rev. McLaunn the police of Wilmington gave a graphic account of the affair. When Mr. Bethea came upon the platform he did not c flinch at the shower of bullets and e shot he received, but continued to shoot every time he found a human mark. One of the policemen prom^ inent in the tragedy said he was from under cover when Bethea ,J came upon the platform. Bethea leveled his pistol at him and he jumped behind a pole to escape live I shots fired at him in rapid succes'"jsion. Mr. McLaurin inspected the ' pole and found five bullet holes in 's | a four inch circle about the ievel of a man's head. The coaches in 'c which Mr. Bethea paced back and ie j forth in his fight to the death were ? riddled with bullets, and gave mute l(^ testimony of the terrible ordeal through which he must have pass'>' ed^ u STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA k. t o-inty cf Dillon.
