The lottery spirit seems to be get ting a stranglehold on business meth ods in this state. Getting something toi nothing holds a strong allure fer most people and to piay upon tirs Weakness is not only questionable but inexcusable. In a great number of •fates such practices are prohibited by law and the protection oi bin children requires similar statutes u, this state. The poss bitities for helpfulness to the individual and to the entire com munity involved in the Music Memory Contest which starts today appeal to ilie imagination. Unques tionably, but until some method is de vised that eliminates absentee land lord ownership and tenant farm’ng. diversification will be found to be ex tremely diflicii't to develop. Some land settlement work must be done before much progress along this line is accomplished and the business men ot. this sert'on could lend their atten- tjon to no more important subject. AID MEETING OF ST. LUKES The Ladies Aid Society of the Lu theran church Iiq’iI its monthly meet ing with Mrs. W. A. Damon on Church street Tuesday afternoon Seventeen members were present and two visitors. After tbe old business was disposed of the the Fathers’ and Sons’ banquet was discussed and several committees were appointed to iook after the bannuet arrangements. The hostess, assisted by Mrs. C. W. Damon, Miss Tillie Lultman, and Mrs. H. B. Wessinger,. served deic'ous chicken salad with coffee and whipped cream. Lovely yellow jonquils added their brightness and fragrance to the rooms. Indications of business recovery are multiplying on every hand. Unem ployment has practically disappeared, railroads are taxed to capacity u. handle freight, construction work runs into astounding figures, future orders insure increased production and market prices are continually climbing. The tremendous undevel oped wealth of this country justifies an unfaltering faith in Us future. There can come nothing more serious than .temporary setbacks and these arf due largely to ignorance and tint idity. SENATOR A. H. WILLIAMS Senator A. H. These attributes have hfi’oed. to he sure, but, that he believes in his cause and has done the necessary work to know his question, are' the big factors. The truth of tne business la he lias presented almost an unan swerable argument to the senators, unwilling as many of them were.'to even “think of such a thing,” and he hag eron a victory.
