Joe Simons, a young telegraph op-,
erator, is in the Bennettsville jaii, J
charged with criminal assault upon a

fourteen years of age.

Bluff, when they suddenly came upon
an automobile standing in the road, |
near the river, and Simons and a girl,
were on the back seat. They did not!
ecognize the girl but next day they 1
jr.ade inquiries which led to her idea-1
tlty. Her father, who is a farmer
-living several miles In the country, j
was notified Saturday night. He
swore out a warrant Sunday morning,
barging pinions with criminal as
sault upon his daughterf In the mean
time Simons had been arrested and,
placed in Jail.
The girl was working at an Indus-1
trial plant in Bennettsville. and :
bearding with a relative. After her 1
father learned of the affair in the
j river swamp Friday afternoon, she
] told him that Simons had assaulted I
her. j
She said that Simons took her to
ride Thursday night, and kept her out 1
late, but that his conduct toward her
was then gentlemanly. After work

Columbia June 25—The Sauth
Carolina Tax Commission today re
ceived a request from the American
Express Company for a reduction
of the tax assessment. The comrais
sion took the matter under advise
ment, but It is understood the re
quest will be turned down.
The express company is assessed
at $4!t7.10r>, which is 42 per cent of
the total value of the company n
property In the state. State and
county taxes, as well as municipal
faxes, will he levied •against this
property. Forty-two per cent is the
taxation basis in South Carolina.
Nelson Frierson, of Columbia, at
torney for the express company, ap
peaied before the commission today
and requested the reduction of the
assessment.
Turkey Balks On

Constantinople, June 25—The
Turkish peace delegation has been
instructed to refuse to sign any
peace treaty which deprives Turkey
of the Smyrna district, Adrianople
or Eastern Thrace.

as she had an engagement to go to

ped in a dark, dreary place, and as
saulted her after she had resisted and
fought him off until she was exhaust
ed. Simons kept her there until late
in the night and brought her to her
boarding place. It is said that her
bruised body and bloody qlythlng show '
signs of the struggle and assault. Her
father says that she will be fourteen *
years old next September. !
Joe Simons has been in Bennetts-;
ville about a year as a telegraph op- 1
erator at the Western Union office. !
His father is said to he an American
born Assyrian, and his mother an !
American woman. They live in Rich-1
iriond, Va. Simons is about 20 years !
old. i
When Simons was arrested he ad-
milted that he had improper relations
with the girl. He has retained J. J.
Evans as attorney.
