JUNE 2. 1920 > One ot the greatest draw backs at the present time ,io the greater de velopment of Florence * is the con stantly increasing drain'on the ready cash which should be spend locally, bpt which instead is being sent to the mall order houses of the North, and spent with merchants of other cities. ; There are 752 men on the pay roll pf the Atlantic Coast Line railroad company with their headquarters in Florence. They are all well paid men and they have much money to spend during a month. A greaf amount of this ready cash is being sent out pff Florence and being spent tin other cities and houses of the North. Jnvl who or what condition Is responsible for this condition we are not in a position to state, but we do know that entirely too much mon ey is being sent away, from Florence which should be spent here. Surely Florence merchants can • • * %buy and sell goods as cheaply as the a erchants anywhere. Surely the men ho earn their living in Florence are loyal to their town and would prefer spending their money with the local merchant unless they have some reus on, or imagined reason, for sending (heir money away. This fault should be remedied. The buyer and seller should get a'- getber on a mutuarally profitable* ba sis and stop this drain on the ready cash which should be spent In Flor ence. and kept in local circulation— . This is a very hand some and significant growth. Flor once hafi gained more people, proper- tolnately than any other South Caro lina city thus far reported and it has attained an impressive size. It is unfortunately true that many men will not work as long as they have plenty of money/ This being true, an indiscriminate distribution' of large bonus checks would paralyze production in proportion to the mini her of recipients who stop work. \Ye all knew that there is insuffi cient labor in the South to properly work and haivest the. crops unless weather conditions are abnormally favorable. It is extremely doubtful whether sufficient food stuffs will he produc ed in this country this year for tin* needs of our own population during the i-nsn'ng twelve months and. if there should be all over the country a shirkuge in the supply of farm labor, it might result in a serious shortage of food causing towering prices, strikes general disorganiza tion. uiiil much suffering.
