May 29—That the stock law enacted by the recent General | Assembly will save to the state of' South Caro'ina thousands of dollars) in the next few years is the opinion 1 expressed by members of the South! Carolina Tax Commission after a' conference in Columbia this week I with representatives cf the lumber-! men’s association .of the state, the conference being called for the pur pose of discussing a number of tax-i ation matters with the commission, 'i The point stressed by the lumber men is that hogs and other animals that have run at large heretofore in many counties caused heavy losses to tlie state in the destruction of trees and growing plants. The lum bermen mentioned particularly one kind of animal that has in the free-j range counties caused much loss to 1 trees, the “razor-back hog,” or “pine rooter,” as he is ca'les in the lower part of the state. This animal roots! into the ground and eats off little nuts that grow on the roots of the trees, the lumber men state, and thus! kill the trees. One hog can kill i twenty trees a week, it was stated. ! The tax commission was met by aj large delegation of lumbar dealers, in structed by a recent state convention; of lumber men to handle certain mat- j ters with the commission. The main ' point before the lumber men with re-! gard to tho making of returns on | their property was logs or the lum ber mad? from the logs should bo re turned for taxation. The ruling of the ccmmission was that the law re quires the return on the logs, in that it specifies that manufacturers shall return on articles purchased for the purpose of manufacture. Members of the tax commission' state that the return of lumber plants ' this year will show a :arge increase over last jear. Members of the lum ber de'egation stated that they were pleased with the work of the com mission in putting all manufacturers on the tax books on th? same basis. Good Music Gustav Ador. who has been appoint ed by the League of Nations Council as chairman of the Interstate Confer once on Finance to be held at Brus sels this summer, is a former Presi dent of the Swiss Confederation, but to the world at large he is better known for his services as president of th** International committee of the Red Cross. With theoutbreak of tiie war M. Ador was given an oppor tunlty to show his talents and skill as an organizer. He founded the world-famous agency of the prisoners; of war, the main purpose of which was to act as intermediary between prisoners and their families or their friends. He started the undertaking in his private residence, it was he who was largely responsible for the exchange of wounded or sick prison ers by the belligerents.
