Hollman, Extension Servce horticulturist. A high-grade general fertilizer containing 8 to 10 per cent of phosphoric acid, 4 to t» per cent of nitrogen and 3 to 4 per cent of potash is recommended lot- general use. For side dressings ni trate of soda is excellent. Commercial fertilizers we high and should be used economicaliy but not too sparingly. As a. guide in apply ing, it might be mentioned that one pound to fifteen feet of row is equiv alent to 1000 pounds per acre. Care should be taken not to burn the roots of plants by heavy applications In the drill at planting. Applied and raked in a few days before planting time, o rthoroughly mixed with the sol) when applied at planting time, fert lizefs are not dangerous to youuiT plants. By many good gardeners nitrate of soda is used as a stimulant to force the growth of the plants after they are started, especially for vegetables such as lettnee, cabbage, cauliflower, and any others which need nitrogen for rapid succulent growth. Nitrate 1 of soda is a concentrated fertilizer fur-1 nisbing nitrogen,- that element which makes the green and vigorous growth jn plants, and should be used sparing ly to avoid Injury. The usual custom is to scatter a little—one pound pet- acre 100 feet—nitrate of soda along* the rows of plants and mix it with the spil by means of a hoe or rake. An other method is to dissolve a table spoonful in a pailfull of water and use this solution for watering the plants, Utking care tbat only a small quan tity of the water is applied around each plant. Does it pay to prune the vines to a single stem and tie them to stakes or trellises? This is the question which many home gardeners ask every year. It does pay, accord ing to George P. Hoffman, Extension Service Agriculturist,, especially if the garden space is limited. Tomato plants left to themselves have a habit of spreading all over the garden and producing their fruit right on tho ground where it becomes covered with dirt every time it rains, and is much more subject to decay. The chief advantages of pruning and staking tomatoes are: 1. A larger number of plants can be set on the given area. 2. Tomatoes JvUl ripen a little eaerlier when plants are pruned and staked. 3. The fruit is kept off the ground, is clean, easy to gather, and less like ly to decay. 4. The quality of the fruit is usual ly better on plants that are pruned and staked. It is true that individual plants ptuned and staked do not produce so Ibrge a quantity of tomatoes as when allowed to run on the ground, but two or three times as many plants can be set on the given area, thereby acutually increasing the quantity of tomatoes proluced from tbat area.
