My dear Sir:— On Feb. 18th, 1920, I stated to the School Board in regular session that 1 had been offered work in Winthrop College during the coming summer. I told tiie board that 1 bad to an swer at once and so referred the matter this early to the hoard for it:; advice. I called to the attention of the hoard the fact that the offered employment was for a time beyond the school term here and really brought up the question of my re maining in the superintendfency ano ther year. The board unanimously, without raising any question or of faring the slightest criticism about the work of the schools, asked that 1 decline the work at Winthrop Col lege and remain with the Florence schools. 1 told the board 1 would, do as requested. Since then the board has held one or two meetings without the official Secretary and Superintendent to dis cuss scl|3ol matters and this after noon notified me that the board would meet in the superintendent’s office at five o’clock. 1 was here as notified by you to be. The meeting I am inclined to believe is beinjj held elsewhere, since no member of the hoard has come to the appointed place. This being the case, 1 cannot longer serve you as Superintendent, jailer the expiration <jf my present 1 term. Your board made with me on ! February a binding moral contract I without question and unanimously. I ! ask you in no way, construe this let- to serve longer as Superintendent of Schools. My inclination was to leave on April 16th. However I have appreciated the cordial support and cooperation always given me by (lie citizens of Florence and the parents of the schools. Too I have appreciated the excellent work and cooperation so uniformly given me by my teachers and I intended to fin ish the session as a duty to citizen ship, the teachers and the pupils and schools that I love and to which I have given a decade of thought and work. No official announcement was made to me of the meeting which was held elsewhere, while i had waited for two 1-curs, until May 14th al though two meetings of the Board- had yif/ervened. No acknowledge- f ment of my letter of April 16 to the' chairman was made until the meet ing of May 14th. Proceeding the meeting- of May 14 the chairman of the Board had as sembled the teachers in each white school and in his talks to them had referred very critically to the Super intendent of Schools, 1 am told. On May 14th tile Superintendent of schools was instructed to at ten I a hoard meeting In his office. At this meeting the question of the boards asking the superintendent to decline his work at Winthrop college and lemain in Florence was discus sed. The minutes of Feb. 2<lth was read. The Secretary had recorded that he stated to th« Board that the offered employment at Winthrop col h lege was for a period beyond Ids em- r I ploytnent here and so brought Up the |! further question of Ids remaining in s the- superintendfency here and that “!the board had asked him to decline thework and remain here. A major (ty of the- board stated that they had not heard the statement about re maining here and that they certain ly did not intend the action to be in terpreted as a request to the superin tendent to remain here another year. The majority ordered the minutes changed by striking out the state ment of the superintendent and the request to remain here permitting the request that he decline work at Winthrop college to remain. A mi nority member stated the minutes were exactly correct and a true statement of what happened and asked to be recorded as objecting to any change. The statement of the superintendent as recorded was ver batim as he_made it to the board. = The majority” either did not hear it A i or did not understand it as it was intern Vd. I am sorry it was not clear for it was certainly vital and recorded carefully by ihe secretary. The original notes vr the meeting taken at a t me when even thing was harmonious are just as recorded in the permanent record and were clear to the secretary, but the ma jority of the board ordered the change. Following this the Chairman pre sented Superintendent’s Brooker re signation made on April 16th. It was formally not accepted. Following this was a third motion instructing the chairman of the board to notify Supt Brooker that he had been nomi nated for reelectlon ’and had been defeated by a vote of 3 to 2 on April 16th. Considering the whole case to the end of last week, I find it impossible “Tanlac—a mighty good medicine, I think.” That is the words Mrs. Ada Davis, of Greer, S.
