Doherty of N.»w York city, who celebrates his iiOth birthday today, is known as one of the largest operators of public utility companies in America. Mr. Doherty grew up ip Columbus, O.; worked as an office boy, and ultimately got recognition tor business ability that has made him very wealthy, as he hud gained control of a large number of public utility companies'in Wisconsin, Tex as, Colorado, Minnesota, Ohio and other states. His inventiv e ability and mastery of the technique of th% manufacture of electricity and gas have aided him in his ventures as a capitalist, and also have won for kin; high honors in the group of experts who serve as manufacturers of light Heat and power. In 1898 Mr. Doh erty was the recipient of the first Wall gold medal awarded by the American Gas Light Association for a paper ort the use-of gas as fuel. the measure of the injustice or wrong which I thought had oeen done Mi. When this request was made, according to -the writer’s un derstanding, the statement was made that the action of the board at that tltne wouldMetermine whether or not Mr. Brooker would be elected again, and he felt that the action taken which requested that he not accept the work but would remain in £lor ence during the summer and super vise, the construction of the High School Building, actually was notice to him that he was elected to servo for another year. ^ Thefl when at a later day he was not elected, it was felt that a great wrong had been done him.
