REPORT AMERICANS
BUY IRISH LAND
SECRETLY
i
I
London, May 6.—The Daily Graph
ic’s Galway correspondent says he
has learned from a responsible source
that Americans, ’possibly members of
Irlsh-American secret societies,” are
sending large sums of money to Irish
banks for the secret purchase of land
in Ireland, notably in Roscommon and
Mayo. le saps:
• “For some time there has been a
perfect epidemic of buying in the
west by small, unimportant people
who like most west Irishmen are suf
fering from what seems (o be unsur-
peasahle land hunger. TUie larger
estates are* everywhere In process of
disintegration, and if my information
be correct advantage has been taken
of this by Irish-Americans to acquire
substantial portions of the island.”
The procedure Is for a number of
tenant farmers or small holders of
land to club together for the purchase
of an estate, paying 20 per cent of
the purchase price In cash and get
ting one of the numerous banks which
are everywhere sprinjflng up to ad
vance the balance against the security
of the title deeds. It is alleged that
it Is American money which is be
ing advanced In some cases by hanks I
and that the latter a. holding the J
title deeds on account of American ,
purchasers.
The correspondent, adds: J
“I have been told by a responsible 1
person that when he was recently in • *
Dublin an official of the congested j *
districts-hourd informed him that the (•J
government was tvell aware of 4
American activities in the acquire
ment of land, and that a new land
act would be shortly Introduced mak
ing- it impossible, by compelling the
disclosure of actual buyers of title
deeds, for any Irish-Amerlcan to ac
quire land In Ireland.”
