On the arrival of the guests, they were met at door by Mrs. E. F. Doug* las and Miss Belva Jones, who pre sented them with their score cards. The entire lower floor thrown en- 1 suite was artistically decorated for the occasion, the large receptlort hall, the parlor, and the dining room beinc decorated in different colors, yat each blending harmoniously with the other. In each room, favors were given, harmonizing in color and design with the decorations therein. After enjoying many games of bridge, a most .delightful sweet course, consisting of cream and cake, was served. Mesdarnes J. F. Dudley, E. F. Douglas, Beiva . Dr. Meeker, who has just returned from a trip to New Orleans, said New Orleans sugar dealers are asking 33 cents wholesale for sugar, expecting to sell at retail for 35 cents.!.' fThis price, he said, is made possibjje, liy the purchasing public, which is will ing to pay almost any price for sugar in order to get it. There is no phy sical shortage of sugar. Dr. Meeker said, but there is a possibility that wholesalers are holding up last year’s stock for higher ’ prices. Purchasers Misled on Future At, the same tilde purchasers, mis led by'stories appearing in print re garding 40-cent sugar, are buying ami hoarding sugar at 20 cents with the , canning season in view. The same principle holds true all the Way down the line, Dr. Meeker believes. He said that although there is a physical shoYtage of cotton and woolen goods in the United States, due no doubt to the large stocks own ed and held in warehouses by the Army and Navy, there is no reason^ for the high prices for cotton and woolen goods now prevailing. Prices may and probably should have risen 75 per cent since 1914. Dr. Meeker said, but there is no possible justifi cation for the large increase shown in latest reports of the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Clothing Has Risen 225 Per Cent A review of prices to be issued by the bureau wil show that clothing as a whole has risen more than 225 per cent since 1913. ^ Borrowing of money during the war has hild a great deal to do with the present high prices. Dr. Meeker said. “To ge,t their profits back quickly, dealers have inflated prices and have made big profits in a relatively short time, instead of making small profits over a period of years, as was the case before the war.
