James Newell Steele of Pamplico,
age 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. James
Steele, a student at the Medical col
lege in Charleston was fatally over
come by gas in a bath room of his
boarding house yesterday afternoon,
efforts to resuscitate him being found
vain. The accident which caused It's
death was alleged to be due to the
flame of a water heater going out
without attracting his attention, and
fumes of escaping gas overcame him
before he could summon assistance.
The odor of the gas resulted in dis
covery of the accident. Prompt modi
calcal attention was given him, but
he was to far gone to recover.
Besides his parents he leaves one
sister and three brothers, one
whom is also a student at the medl
cal college, Charleston.
His body was brought up from Chat
leston last night, accompanied by
delegation of his fellow students. The
burial wil Rake place at Pamplico
this afternoon.

a conspicious place a list of charges,
and also the score card of the slate
board of health. This score card
shows how nearly the establishment
comes up to (he requirements of the
inspection system.
The score card covers such points
of hotel sanitation, such as cleanli
ness of floors, screening, cuspidors,
ventilation, adequate plumbing, indi
vidual soap and towels, improper ad
vertisements, educational placards,
cleanliness of attendants, fire es
capes, clean linen, and safe milq and
water supply.
It will be possible for a hotel'oi
restaurant to score l.Od, which is per
fection; though a score of 850 is ex
cellent; 750 to 850 is good; 000 to
750 is fair; below tiOo is bad and pre
judicial to health.

WANDERING . ADVENTURERS

Trieste, April 28.—The road to
Fiume is set with “traps” to catch
the wandering adventurer. Nine
i post carabineers are placed along the
way of 48 miles from Trieste and
passports and other documents arc
examined with the closest scrutiny at
each. An automobile cannot pass
the post unless the man on watch has
consented and raises a wooden gate
similar to those at. an American rail
road crossing.
Seven f the “traps" are on the
Italian regular command’s side of the
route and two on d'Annunzio’s side.
There are three within five miles of
Trieste and the remaining four scat
tered at about equal distance apart
fo rthe rest of the way until the
poet’s frontier is reached.

Washington. April 28.—Means cf
stimulating production of the necessl
ties of life, as a step toward th“ <
of American economic and social ills,
will be the sole topic of discussion
at tlie (fighth annual conference of
the United States Chamber of Com
merce which opened in Atlantic City
Monday and will continue until to
morrow.
Holding tha tthe responsibility for
increased production rests equally
upon capital, labor and agricultural
interests, the program committee, if
is announced here today, has arrang
ed to have representatives of each
present their views on the question.
While the conference will deal
primarily with material methods o
increasing production, such as intro
duction of modern machinery, elm!-
nation of waste and the increased ef
ficiency of distribution, the Chamber
is prepared, it was learned today, to
follow with a nation-wide effort to
stir individual Americans to their
duty to aid the movement in every
lino of endeavor.
Industrial unrest reported by mem
bers of the Chamber is without ex
ception ascribed as the basic cause
to rthe high prices me.average work

ported an apparent disposition on
the part of the worker to reduce his

launched'his campaign for the the
formation of volunteer “maternity
squads,” involving the virtual nation
alization of men, Dr. Garnet, the
noted Paris scientist, who believes
that is the only way to combat the
danger of French race suicide, has
been flooded with letters from wo
men. including some noted society
lead “ds, asking him to open “recruit
ing stations.”
Or. Garnol has been assured that
there are thousands of patriotic
French women who would be glad to
volunteer for motherhood under his
plan. He has made some inquiries
and found that the majority of these
aspirants are past thirty-five, which
