Because some 00 000 Americans do
not or cannot come to the library it
hns ‘been decreed that the library
shall be taken to the citizen. The
American Library Association, repre
sent inp some 5.000 repositories of
hooks, is formulating a vigorous cam
paign to extend facilities to remote
districts and arouse keener interest
generally in the advantages of good
reading. ’
It Is chiefy planned to bring to the
attention of those who read little,
hooks dealing with present-day top
ics and problems. To this might welt
be added earnest effort to stimulate
a more general reading of history
and of American biography. Knov-

man to form an opinion upon todays
problems, but only the background
afforded by experience can enable

A native' of Michigan, and educated,
at Albion Colleg'?, Mr. Lovejoy drat
tried to do his chief work In the min
istry. A pastorate near New York
city opened his eyes td some of the
ethical as well as financial phases of
urban life about which he had not
known much, and - he began to take
up the study of social questions. In
1904 lie became connected with the
National Child Labor Committee and
since POT he hns been its general
secretary! lie has steadily gone
ahead. organized public opinion,
kept out cf t*ny partisan or section
al phase of the question, and now
sees the reward of his labor. Mf.
Leveloy is a member of most of the
societies in America that have been
established to advance civic reform
and industrial betterment.

spect to the Charleston Terminal

natural tendency toward pessimism.
This manifests itself in expressions
