and while there is no popular name

botanists as Dauhentonia longiiolia.
It grows in abundance along the low’-
er Rio Grande and i nthe neighbor
hood of San Antonio. The leaflets
of the shrub are alternate with twelve
to sixty leaflets, and th'J fiow,ers
tange in color from scarlet to bright
yellow. The pods have four wings
and the seeds are separated from onej
another by cross part^ons.
The poison appears to be in the
seeds, while the pods themselves j
have little if any poison. Less' than
two ounces of the seeds may kill a
sheep and a little more than one |
ounce may produce very harmful ef
fects. So f|a* all reported cases of]
poisoning havo been of sheep and
goats in Texas, but it 13 possible
that cases may occur in other locali
ties and that, under suitable circum |
stances, cattle '4vould be affected.
In light cases of poisoning tht
symptom is depression. Wlren ani
mals are fatally poisoned they be
come weak, the breathing is labored
and they die with very litle strug
giing. A considerable period, some
times a full day, elapses between eat
ing and the appearance of any symp
toms of poisoning.
The department specialists fear
that little can be done In the way of
remedies. Laxatives like Epsom
sails aid in the elimination of the pol
son, but the main reliance must be i
in prevention. The practice of shorl
feed by herders is frowned upon by
the specialists, who point out that
caxes of poisoning occur In winter
and ordinarily in areas where food Is
scanty.

Director Wesley Ruggles engaged

dren for the scene, but on the way to
punta Monica Canyon near Los An
geles where the bazaar had been
built, a huge motor bus broke down
and it looked as if Mr. Ruggi<*g would
have to hold up activities until his
stranded extras could he hurried to
the canvon. However, the gayly dec
orated booths and stands, along with I
the music caused a number of tour-1
ists to stop their cars and Mr. Rug-
gles found them glad of a chance to]
swell the attendance at his fair and
get their first opportunity to appear]
before the motion picture camera.
