Mr Edward Haines, a, former Flor
entine, now located at Jacksonville,
Fla., and who is now connected with
one of the War Boards, tpent Thurs
ay in Florence, calling on old friends

rfadnei is a son of the Mr. Daniel W.,
and Mrs. Haines formerly of this city.
The senior Mr. Haines was once in-
lendent of the town of Florence, and
was Master Mechanic of the old'shops
of the North Eastern Railroad and
later -for the Wilmington, Columbia 1
and Augusta shoos, when they were
first moved to this city. Mr. Haines
was most agreeably surprisetd to
find in the twenty years of his ab
sence that Florence had grown to be
such a tine city amLwith so many fine
business! iliouses and loveiy homer.
He could not realize that where his
old licome stood, the handsome re
sidence of Senator J. W. McCown, haa
arisen, ymrt many new buildings sur
rounding it. Mr. Haineeteaeied that
his brother, Mr. Kendal! Haines, and
himself, the only members of the
family left, are now residents' or

The Junior- Church Aid Society of
the Methodist Church met
afternoon with Mrs. S. B. Harper at
her home on West Cheves street, the
new president, Mrs. W. D. Harper
presiding and opening the meeting
with a Scripture reading. This being
the first meeting of the societys
new year, many plans for the years
work were discussed. Among other
things the society decided to buy a
piano for the ladies parlor of the
church, which will be quite an addi
tion to this already attractive room.
After adjournment a salad course
was served.

News has been received of the
death of Mr. Leggitt Bostick, son of
Mrs. Bostick of New Zion. The body
will be shipped from the West to
New Zion for burial there Sunday.

• Auto tire stealing is the latest fad
in Florence. Several instances of the
loss of tires from machines has been
reported to the authorities within the
past several days and arrests have
been made. Among those who have
been caught with the goods are Wal
ter Scott and Fred McCucry both of
whom will answer to the Magistrate
tomorrow.
STOLE AUTO TIRES
Henry Hayes colored will be
brought before Magistrate Casque to
morrow on charges of stealing two
auto tires from the car of Mr. Mun
son. Asksoon as Sheriff Burch was
notified of the theft he arrested the
man and secured the tires.
