In failing to provide for the con tinuance of the Federal Employment Service, at least for a time, Congress has made a mistake. If i.he assist ance of this organization ever were needed, it is now when thousands of soidiers are being turned into civil life without jobs to go to. Up to this time the Employment service has been active in finding places for these men, and has located many of them in good positions. Gibson was summoned as a prose cuti'n^ witness before the reorder to day to tes.’ ify with reference to a stat'-ment which lie is alleged to have made that “John Doe,” a blind tiger whose identity was not revealed, had been cont-inuously keeping, storing a/nd selling alcholic liquors, in the city of Florence, in violation of the ordin ances, and with the lull knowledge and consent of the Chief of Police who, according lo- the statement, is alleged to have acquiesced in the con toinuation of such violation by inacti vity on his part, and that one of the officers of the Pc-lice Department knew of the alliance winch is charged to exist between the Chief of Police and the blind tiger, bur for fear of los ing his position had not taken any action. When called to testify today Mr. Gibson’s. 1 alorney moved for a continu ance stating that his client did not know John Dee, nor why be has been eplied to tesLify in the case against him. During the negotiations all par ties finally agreed to refer the matter* to City Council, and the Recorder consetnted to this procedure. The Chief of Police, through his attorney, insisted upon an immediate hearing, m public , of the charges which It de veloped Mr. Gibson would prefer hgainst him. Attorney for Mr. Gibson then asked for time in which to pre- p:vra the specfications of the charges, fend this was agreed to. The case will probably be heard Saturday. The hearing will be public. TUESDAY AFTERNOON, FEB. 25,1?19 371ST ABOUT ALL DISCHARGED NDW REGIMENT WILL BE COMPLETE LY DEMOBILIZED THIS WEEK. OFFICERS TO GO LAST. The TiTlst Infantry is being demo- bi ized and by the end of the week the en ire outfit will have left the ser vice of the array. The company com mandors and higher officeqrs will be the last to get their discharges and; these leave camp by Thursday or Fri day of this week. The demobilizeticn of the 371st be- g;tn Saturday, and during Saturday, and Sunday the men left camp in large numbers. The yegtiment was quartered with the depot brigade for demobilization purposes. Besides the officers and non-coms in charge of the property, there are only a few men lei! in the outfit. , The 371st had about 1,500 men when it returned to Camp Jackson, after its splendid achievements overseas, and up to uoon today approximate y 1,100 had been discharged and others are leaving Ihis afternoon. The first half of the week will see all that is now left of t/he rank and file of the regi- ment leave camp and the officers will all have been discharged before the w-eek passes. The 271s1 is made up entirely of Soufh Carolinians, and except for the officers, the regiment is of colored men. They made an enviable record in the fighting in France and when the battle-scarred outfit paraded through Columbia streets last week the heorts of the city’s thousands were stirred. In the ranks} were many who wore medals’, and there, were >‘hose who also showed the marks of battle. A few limped slight ly. One of the best known officers in this regiment is! Major Thomas H. Msffatt. a prominnt member of the Columbia bar. Major Moffatt will likely be disharged this week. Feb. 25.—By vote of 22 to 12 the senate today refused to con timio until next session the bill pro viriing for a niemc»ial building at the University of South Carolina and the State Negro College, to the boys who fell in France. Senator Young offered a bill to make October 8 a legal holiday in this state to be known as. “Columbia Ely.” Gov. This movement is gaining ground every day as the bus iness men of the city realize its , meaning. It should he altogether successful. What we need in Flor ence is a commercial organization truly representa/tlve of the business, prcfeswional, tiivic, agricultu’.tal (and industrial interests of the oh y and county and one in which all interests can unite in questions of ft cling the public welfare.
