The supp.ement, which cou.ains Sb pages of as valuable mat ter as could be well bot together for tor as couid well.be got together lot both larmers and business men, came in the mails yesterday, i. should not be case aside as merely a “big paper.’ It should be read and reread, and then placed carefully away for refer ence. The publication coud not be more timely. With the price of cot ton an unknown Quantity, and hope only (o lead the planter out of his difficulties. Should lie continue to pm all of his ground in the staple: with most of the farmers purzled sorely to know what to do, he New and Cour ier, points the way to one of the solutions cf the agricultural problem. It,is true th'a* long strides have been matle in this state in tlie live stock industry, hut it is as yet only in its infancy, and greater development imiy r>e e\pected. The farmers are fa’st beginning to realize that they c^n raise hi Eft grade cattle and lugs wit a profit to themselves and to uhe eqmjnenity in which they live. May thfci r eyes be opened wider to ijh? tremendous possibilities ot the Hidus- try. 4f distance were measured by the condition of the road traveled Fior eneo and Darlington would be ten tlifcusand miles apart. lower figures But wueu the p.lces went down they stuck hard and tast .o the high rates. In some cases, though .the wholesale price dropped two weeks ago, they are still selling at the same old high price. The mer chant cannot wonder that the con sumers, who keep pretty well pou^d these days on the m&ttej- cf prices wholesale and retail, are in high feather over such treatment, nor can they kick if the people go elsewhere to buy their needs. Once people be come accustomed to the idea of buy ing outside of town t!he habit, grows to the detriment of the entire com- fhuni, y. it 'is a practice that strikes at the root of community life and prosperity: But the responsibility is on the merchants of Florence. It re mains with them whether Florence shall be a “buy-r»-home>’ town or net. Going back to the matter of p ices, it vvouid b? well to consider ihai the merchants have their side of the case. The great major’i y cl retailers are not profiteers, * The public may well consider the);r difficulties. If they are. paying Che .same greatly increased prices tc help, also for rents, fuel, light, wrap ping paper, freights, express, and every.hing, they can’t be expected toi diop their prices as fast proportion ately as the wholesale decline. The sitantion tends to take care cf itself with some justice. Retail trade is a field where sharp competi- t’on usually prevails. There are gen erally many merchants who are more anxious tc vin friends ’and expand business and got new trade, Chan to get the fail percentage of profit on every salf.. That kind of man is pretty proinp- to follow the downward course of pi ic es. Often he loses money on his cr.riier sales on the lower level. •But. there->are generally enought of these hustlers in the game of retail trade, so that prices do not stay at h'gh figures very long after the bor- tom logins to’ drop out of the whole sale market. Lower wholesale prices are pretty soon reflected in newe- paper advertising. This publicity, gives the advantage to the man who is willing to follow the wholesale marifcfit fairly closely, and it is a policy that males warm business friends. Minister Praises Tanlac As Duty SPENT HUNDRED > OF IDOLLAR* IN VAIN SEEKING ’RELIEF K’ew \ ork Cotton Exchange - ex ports arc worried over the prospect ot -Reduction in the cotton acreage. andVivc already begun a propagan da to make the farmers of the cotton states see what they term the error of .their way. There is blood in uite eye of the cotton fanner now, how ever, and soft words and smooth ar gument, will not turn him away from the determination to secure a fai price for fits cotton. The cotton ex pert, or more properly, the cotton e:*i change expert; the manipulator who paces the pit and joins in organized effort to send the staple down and. down, that he may turn thousands and millions to his. gain at tihe ex pense of (lie.producer, says, forsooth, that the xcop^tUiould bo made cheap er. Also, he atterTTpts to frighten u.i by liioldiug up the possibilities of China in cotton growing. These ar guments will not avail.
