( Perhaps the first reference to at tempts to reckon time by mechanical j means is found in Isaiah 88-8, written , supposedly about 718 B. C., “the sun dial of Ahaz.” Pliny says that Anaxl-' mander Invented a sun dial about 550 B. C. The first sun dial at Rome was placed the Temple of Quirinus, about 298 B. Evans of Steubenville, Ohio. - “For five months,” says Mr.Evans, T have been wearing the same pair of NeOlin-soled shoes at my work at the La Belle Iron Works and they are good for two months more wear. As my work takes me to all parts of the mill daily where I have to walk ever cinders, slag, etc., it is simply out of ihe question to buy anything .else to take the place of Neolin Soles.” You too—and your whole family—will fnd Neolin-soled shoes wear long and so save money. They are made by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber bowels and cleanse, Another striking evidence of the magnitude of this influenza epidemic is found in the great sums that life insurance companies arepa ying out to the families of the victims. If he life insurance protecteion out stand'ng in the United States (not in cluding fraternal insurance) wa> divided among all the inhabitants .each person would receive $280. On phis basis the families of the Ameri can victims of the epidemic stand to receive ! approximately $120,000,000 form the life companies. While this figure may not be reach ed, life insurance is furnishing a mighty relief fund which will ease the burden of a vast number of people i bereaved by this scourge but not all for unforlunately a large number of , the 42."*,000 victims failed to protect themselves with insurance. There is an urgent insurance message in the fact that the influenza epidemic has attacked chiefly young and ap parently healthy lives—the bulk of .them being between ages 20 and 40. The so-caled “law>’ of morality is not unchangeable. It has its fluctua tions; it ba| its ‘epidemic hazard” '.and its “war hazard” just as fire in surance has its ‘conflagration hazarjl.' This, danger was regarded as remote asd impossible by many, but the com panics bad the foresight to guard against these ‘impossible’’ dangers by maintaining a safe emergency surplus over* all liabllues. thig 1 To Keep Cider Sweet To keep dder eweet place in each barrel Immediately on making, mus tard, four ounces; salt one ounce, and ground chalk, one ounce.
