Bell Telephone 225 Entered as second class matter, Dec ember 6, 1903 at the postoffice at Flor ence, S C., under the Act of Congress, March 3, 1879. Obituaries, cards of thanks and no tices of all kinds purely personal in their nature or in the nature of adver tisements, such as church fairs and anything of a money making nature are invariably charged for. Monday, M»rch 1 1909. If prohibition has, in fact lost ground within the past year it is cer tainly due to the fact that the men who were engineering the movement overreached temselves . There was bad generalship, and when “under standings” with ones opponents are violated bad generalship is a crime, because only success can excuse such action. < The republican administration is about to give us another example of the bad financial principles on which this government is run and on which our monetary system is based. The government is in debt up to its neck and getting deeper. A large bond is sue Is imperative. On these bonds the national banks fatten and the cur rency is increased. So there Is every incentive to put the government in debt, It is the only way that the peo ple can get money. 1 As far as we know Florence does not want an election on the liquor question, but she might as well have it now as well as two years hence, and if the sale of liquor in the county is offensve it can be voted out. If the people decide 4o continue it they obli gate themselves to do what they tan to prevent the abuse of the privilege. We know that the people are divided on the issue, we know that there are men to-day who were prohibitionists in the last election that we had on the question who would vote to continue the sale now. Ws suppose that there are some who favsred the sale at the last election who would oppose it now The fight is on, it is before the people for settlement and there is no doubt as to there being two sides to the ques tions, so those who have interests one way or the other may get busy. The Times will not use what influence it has for the advantage of either side. It is a fight which should be waged with equal rights to all and special advantage to neither side, so that the Times will be pleased to offer to both sides space for their publications not over a column a day, and no article to contain anything which the conven tions of newspapers debar. Let each side select its editors and they may f^et busy at once, the Editor of the paper will watch the fight with inter est. The people of Florence must re member that the way in which we secured the only advantage that we have ever secured in the matter of the postoffice here was in standing to gether as a whole, and that if we fail in that, if we break up into factions we will not only not gain anything more, but will lose what we have gain ed. There is no occasion for a divis ion in this matter, so far as we can see, no new conditions to justify a change of front and every reason why, on the eve of a victory in the matter we should change in the slightest our plan of attack. We hope that Senator Smith will be able to smoke out the South Carolin ian who has been responsible for the postoffice situation in this city and let us know who he is. It would be well to have his name on record. It is just as well for us to remember while we are calling attention to oth er maters in connection with the post- office, that Senator Tillman is the man whom we have to thank for the situa tion, and all that we have accomplish ed so far has been through his inter est in the case. He prevented confir mation in the senate, and without that confirmation further action was im possible. His illness was bad for us but he had left his lines of defense in such condition that they could not be broken. Good Cough Medicine for Children..
