W. H. B. Broadhurst’s “Man of the Hour" at the Auditorium Wednesday. “The Man of the Hour” the play by George Broadhurst which is to be act ed here next Wednesday night, in the Auditorium, by William A. Brady and Joseph R. Grismer’s special company, is unique in one respect. This is that every character in it is describable without the use of the character-name This would seem to indicate what has all along been claimed for this good and unusual play—that the author drew his types from the life around him. What other play of real note and with an uncommon record of successes in the big cities of the country can be pointed to as containing dramatic per sonages who may be talked of in this wise? The hero is always spoken of as the Mayor; his chief opponent as the Boss his man chum as the idler; his sweet heart as the Heiress; the chum’s fi- nancee as the Stenographer; his po litical ally as the Alderman; the ally of the Boss as the Financier; the Fi- nacier's ally as the Broker; the offi cial “pull” of the scoundrels as the Judge; The Mother is the reference to one of the good women of the play; and the Easy Mark is the manner in which a weak and uncertain young business man is spoken of because he wavers and oscillates between the temptation to do evil and his natural inclination to be good. And, if anybody be asked as to another character, and one of im portance in the unfolding of the thrill ing plot plot of intrigue and love, he Or she will reply: “O! you mean the Sec retary." All, these sounds, true, recognizable American types will be seen in “The Man of the Hour” on Wednesday next —the Mayor, the Idler, the Boss, the Alderman, the Financier, the Broker, the Secretary, the Easy Mark the Heir ess. the Stenographer, and the Mother. Jones the Union man convicted ttf killing his wife is being argued to-daj. A white man yesterday killed a ne gro barber in Anderson who had curl ed him. To-day is IfiOth anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Sovereign Lowe was found guilty yesterday by an Aiken jury of killing his wife. He will get a life term li the pen. The Senate Committee has increas ed the Charleston Navy Yard bill $40,- 500 making the total $135,000. Rock Hill yesterday voted to havt a new sewerage system.
