Mr. C. E. Farmer brought in yesterday a good lot of tobacco. He sold at the Farmer’s Ware house, at an average of over 14c , and for a considerable portion of his tobacco received 27 1-2 and 35 cents. He was of course well pleased. What bettor evidence of Florence as a market and the grades of Florence County tobac co! We are informed by Mr. T. (5. Phillips of the Pee Dee Ware house of sales ant conditions there. This week’s sales have been ex tremely good and the farmers thoroughly satisfied, realizing more than they expected for their tobacco. Prices ranged from 5 to 35 cents. The discussion between Gen. A large part of the parishes ot Acadia, St. Landry and Vermillion is uow under wa ter and the harvest in that vicini ty has consequently come to a standstill. Fortunately Calcasieu Parish, Cameron Parish and East ern Texas escaped practically un harmed, but even so the shortage will be very considerable. Early estimates of loss are wild, some p'acing the figures as high as 75 per cent, but in my opinion not over 25 per cent is gone beyond reclamation.” Mr. Talmage added that this damage would probably tend to strengthen the general rice mar ket,"and as the quarantine restric tions at New Orleans seem likely to drive the bulk of business in this direction, it is almost certain that South Carolina planters will experience another highly profita ble year if they market their hold ings with deliberation. Roland Ellis, chairman ot* the committ* o on invitation for th* Macon Carnival, recently went with other Mucon gentlemen to Jacksonville to urge Colonel W. J. Bryan to attend th ami deliver an Bryan felt that he could not ac cept the invitation, but he made a strong impression upon the Macon committees. Mr. Ellis says: “He spent the Sunday when we were in camp driving about nurs ing the sick, providing them w ith dainties and relieving the MitlVr- ing. Ceaselessly, without dinner and supper, ho went, until he was worn out by fatigue. This man, surfeited with the plaud’tsof his fellows, is leading the life of a hero among the fever stricken commands. His tout is pitched with them, out in tne open; his daily place is by the sickbed, and his nightly occupation is relieving some man’s distress. Though clothed in the raiment of high military authority, he was still the plain American democrat, lov ing his men and by them be loved.” This a fine tribute to Colonel Bryan, and places him m a noble light. He is not our ideal political leader, but the manner in w hich some newspapers have treated his services in the army, and the re flections they have cast upon his motives in accepting a military commission have been contempti ble. ColtfiftMfruff pttiqitmh noblyliia has spoken of him. —At flmtafcfournal. Welling’* Word Contest.
