Speaking of the acquisition of the Territory of Louisiana, Florida and that ac quired from Mexico, it says the people of these countries were not consulted about their annexa tion. Further that “precedent is no more against the acquisition of insuiar territory or of territory in another hemisphere, than it was against the annexation of Louis iana.” The argument is misleading and does not state the whole truth. The countries spoken of as annex ed were touching the jborders of our States, were a veryj part of the mainland of North^yierica and [er^tmder^fojreig^alkinion. Be sides, the ritories were great necessities, as we wer from the Gulf of Mexic of the Mississippi and Ocean. Further, it is well at the times, Louisi and New Mexico w :otnmercial shut out the mouth Jhe Pacific Weiling’H Word Contest. A word contest for the second Buck Jr. range open to girls and boys under 14 years of age will begin on August 15, and close on October 15. The range will be given to the girl sending in the largest list of English words from the words “Back’s Stove* and Ranges,” Back’s trade mark. On ly such letters as are found in these words can be used. The same let ter must not appear oftener to a word than it appears in the trade I mark. For instance the letter “b” can only appear once in a word, The Angusta Chroniole says that the largest wheat crop in the his tory of the world is being harvest ed—740,000,000 bnshels- Saya the Atlanta Journal, there is a wide difference of opinion among the peace commiesiouers as to the disposition of the Philip pines, ex-secretary Day and Mr. Whitelow Reid being in favor of going no further than a demand for the possession of Manila, and Senator Davis and Frye wanting the whole groap. Justice White does not want any part of them. If this be true, here are three to two against the annexation of the Philippines. Skin Diseases. Price, 25 cents. Sold by V Condition Powders for nown that na, Florida re annexed, these countries were marked un known upon the map, except a very few settlements and garrisons, and inhabited by roving bands of Indians, thieves, Mexicans and adventurous American hunters who had little thought or care about the choice of government. And it was necessary, too, tor the protection of border States that some of these territories were purchased. That the reasons for the annexation of Louisiana, Flori da and New Mexico, are not at all the same as for the annexation of the Philippines, is too p!a<n to talk about. Without going further the ques tion is pertinent, is the taking pos session of the Philippines—thous ands of miles away in the Pacific —inhabited for the most part by savages—a political necessity? Is it a commercial necessity ? Is it not rather in the spirit of greed and conquest ?
