P. Youmans. Indians from the far North, meeting an Esquimaux, learn that a strange man descended from the clouds on the shores of Hudson’s Bay. Wi Stannard and family have returned from Charleston Hon. W. F. Dargan, of Darling ton, is in the city to-day. Mr. Dargan was recently elected mem ber of the Legislature from Dar lington county. It is beyond question now that the ist. S. C. Reg’t. is be muster ed out. The opinion is that the 2nd Regiment will be retained in the service. It is said that a majority of the volunteers desire it. John Sherman styles the late war “cruel and unjust” and sug gest a thorough investigation o- the inefficiencies of the war de partment and to this end the selec tion of a board of medical men not mdentffied with, the opinion is forcing the French cab inet to reopen the investigation. Madame Dreyfus, Ufee a noble and loyal wife, is exercising all her womanly tact and importunity to have it done and nothing else will satisfy public opinion. The Atlanta Journal speaking of bachelors says that in 1890 there were 1,427,767 and 3,224,494 old maids, giving a considerable major ity to the former. “A man unmarried is at best only half a man, and very often he represents a still smaller fraction of complete humanity. Yesterday afternoon the funeral services were held at the Method ist church, being conducted by the Revs. Walter I. Herbert and II. R. Moseley, and he was hurled at Mt. Hope cemetery. Mr. Waters had been confined to the house since last January, during all the long days he was a great sufferer. He was a thor- oughly good man, and bore the pain patiently. With an unfalter ing trust in his God he approached the end, and his death was that of a Christian. He leaves a widow and one son, Mr. Edgar Waters, besides a large number of friends and relatives to mourn. Lemons as Medicine. Florence is in the midst of a great big festival. It began this morning with the trades’ display, is still going on and will continue to-morrow. Crowds of people are in town, and everybody is having a good time, The trades’ display was an immense success. About thirty floats were in the proces sion, all of which were splendid advertisements of the business houses represented and many of which were artistic in design and beautiful to look upon. They not only showed skill in arrangement, but their attractiveness was more than doubled by the added pres ence of a number of FTorence’s fair daughters. A detailed description of each it is impossible to give to day as this paper goes on the press at 2 o’clock, but it will appear to morrow. Suffice, to say that 6ach one was a credit to the business concern it represented, and the display as a hq reel races will De neld at the corn-' er of E.vans and Dargan streets. It is certain that two teams from Co lumbia and one from Charleston will be here, and others are expect ed to-night and to-morrow morn ing. The contests are sure to be interesting, and crowds will wit ness them. The Hope Company of this city has two teams, No’s 1 and 2, and they are runners. No. 1 is com posed of the following: Robert Laughlin, John Brunson, Julian Pendergrass, James Swails, Robert Bray, Geo. Holliday, Ed. Stackhouse, Geo. Morgan, Jno. C. Husbands, Haynsworth McCown and Tom Lamb, and No. 2’s run ners are: Robt. Thieme, Julian McCall, John L. Hollis, Jr.. Mat NcCown, Robert Wilkes, Jess Cottingham, Walter Morgan, Clar ence Morris, Eddie Rollins, Armie Swails and Herbert Wilson. UICYCLE RACES. Again to-morrow afternoon at 3 o’clock the bicycle race track will present a lively scene. Six races are to be run as follows: 1— One mile novice. 2- ^Quarter mile open. 3 —Southern championship. 4— One mile, Florence county. 5— F'ive mile handicap. 6— One mile paced. For the Southern Championship there are twelve entries, and for i;he 5-mile handicap there are six- i een, B. P. Youmans, of Florence, entering both.
