As the headlines of the News and Courier of yesterday have it; “Spain sues for peace,” “She asks only two questions,” “Will this country consider peace ? If so will the President indicate the terms?” “Both questions answer ed yes.” Of course the United States with credit to itself could not do otherwise. This country is waging no war of conquest in its own behalf. It is waging a war for humani ty's sake and we fail to understand the subsequent headlines, “Cuba and Porto Kico must be ours,” par ticularly as coming from the News and Courier. We can understand how our Government could demand Porto Kico as an indemnity, and, without violating her traditional poli cy, secure coaling stations in the Pacific and commercial treaties for the protection and expansion of her commerce, and, if necessary, further indemnities, but we cannot see how it could demand Cuba as as its own. It seems to us the veriest cupidi ty and dishonesty to talk of annex ing Cuba in the face of the solemn pledges we have made, and, if the people are consulted, hardly a question that say so. institute. will Bagla at ClaaMOn College on Auguit » Aa« Contlao* Through the lAth. Clayton made a sible talk at the Pee Dee warehouse this morning. He showed the ad vantages Florence has as a tobacco market, showed that the growth and prosperity of the town de pends upon the prosperity of the country, urged that the business men ©t the town make it to the in terest of the tobacco planter to sell here, and following that ho urged the planters to bring the tobacco in. To all of which the Times adds it appeal. Let the people of the town and of the country work with their mutual interest in view, and all will be well. Since writing the foregoing article we see it foreshadowed in the Washington correspondence of the News and Courier that “the Government will demand thp ces sion of Porto Rico as a war in demnity and the cession of Cuba in trust for the Cubans.” “Spain’s flag must go down in the Western Hemisphere.” As to the Philippines, “the President’s idea is that the inter- terest of this Government would be best served by the possession of nothing more than a coaling sta tion there.’’“The gravest problems of Government would result were the attempt to be made to annex them owing to the heterogeneous and ill-favored charact r of the large population of the islands, <fco.” Porto Rico ours and Cuba in trust for the Cubans and a coaling station in the Philippines: This will do and we can heartily com mend the policy. This course will redeem the promise of Cuba for the Cubans, free and independ ent, and at the same time give op portunity for progress in the en forcement of the Monroe doctrine, a time honored and well-settled principle in the policy of our gov ernment , If all this be true, the President is taking high and honorable ground in the settlement of these great questions- We do not like this suggestion, though: “He feels, however, that to give the islands (Philippine) back to Spain, now that they are in the practical possession of this government, would be unpopular and jxtUticsilty dangerous.” We hope President McKinley is trying to take care of the country and not himself and party, and that, if he does not come out of the grave situation a successful politician, he will come out of it a man. W. A. McLarty & Sou, Dime Box, Tex., says: “We want some more of Ramon's Pepsin Chill Tonic, as it is the best we ever bandied. My sou prescribes it in his practice, and says it is the only chill tonic vbich even a child can take without injury to the stomach. You may send me a gross of Ramon’s Pepsin Chill Tonic and I gross of Ramon’s Tonic Liver Pills.” It Was Unintentional. Yesterday the type lacerated the name of the gentleman who will have charge of the books at the Pee Dee warehouse. Mr. W. B. Meacham is his name; not “Macborn.” Expect to Move at Once. Chickamauga Park, July 18.— Official orders have been received from Gen. Wade instructing us to join Gen. Lee at Jacksonville.
