The Spanish-American war has been the means of establishing one fact beyond all question. A patriotic, keen-minded, Christian gentleman sits in the president’s chair. i { f-* V, ; J HL'KRAH FOR CHARLESTON! The old City by the Sea has won the victory. The United Confed erate Veterans and Sons of Veter ans meet there in ’99 and we are proud of it. We are proud too of the speeches of Messrs. Bacot and Legare, who in eloquent tones, called the veterans to the “birth place of the Confederacy” and dared to awaken memories of'that “blessed and lost cause, which rose in the east at Charleston and set in the great west forever.” It is feared by some who wit nessed the great outpour of old soldiers and visitors at Atlanta ithat Charleston will not be equal to the occasion. To those who know what Charleston means by generous entertainment there is no Klim Fact*. On Saturday morning about daylight one of the tobacco barns of Mr. Arthur J. Ham was discov ered to be on fire by one of the farm hands, and in a few minutes the barn waa consuu’ed- The origin of this fire is somewhat of a mystery, as Mr. Ham had finish ed ouring a barn of tobacco on Thursday, and no fire had been there since. Fortunately, Mr. Ham removed the tobacco to his pack house on Friday, so he lost but the barn. However, the loss is heavy, though Mr. Ham had another barn that he refitted im mediately, and, undeterred by his misfortune, has pluckily gone to work to cure his crop in the smaller barn. There has been a great deal of sickness m this community this summer, and it is hoped the few r and other ailments will abate now. Miss Emma Myers, who was iH of typhoid fever for seventy days, is convalescing, and now bids fair to make a rapid recovery. Crops are looking remarkably well, thongb corn is seriously dam aged by the drought. A shower occurred Saturday af ternoon, though it came in spots —in nearly every place the rain was very heavy, flooding every thing, while in others it was not sufficient to lay the dust- A gen eral ditoh-filiing rain is what growing vegetation needs now. Mrs. Mary Lawrence, who has beeu ill since December last, is improving. Little Jimmie, son of Capt. and Mrs. G«o. L. Lawrence, is serious ly ill, though a favorable change has taken place in his condition, and it is hoped he will soon recov er. Mrs. Timmons dined a number of friends Sunday at her hospita ble home. Henry, the little son of Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Revell, who has been critically ill, is improving. Mrs. Sne Anderson, of Bnie, N.
