■ -m >>r ;•*'#%;- Joseph H. Irwin, of Allegheny City, Pa., comes to the front with the some what unique suggestion that the present cities of New York. Philadelphia and Chicago be converted Into separate mu nicipal commonwealths. In support of this suggestion. Mr. Irwin observes that when our simple forefathers fram ed the Constitution of the United States they never dreamed that within one hundred years from that time cities would spring up in this country with 8,000,000 inhabitants; else they would have made some provision for convert ing them into States. Before convert ing these cities Into States. Mr. Irwin’s idea is to annex to each of them enough surrounding territory to give them re spectable areas. ft L I’m Soli red!” As tired in the morning u when I so to bed I Why is it? An electric door mat has been in vented, which rings a bell as soon as any one steps on it, thus making it safe to leave the doors open. The occasional discovery of fossil plants and bones in the Arctic regions shows that at some period of history an almost tropical climate once pre vailed in the far north. It is reported that a huge central station will bo constructed in Saxony to supply electricity throughout the the kingdom ; ICS towns will be con nected with the station. Padlocks are being manufactured with an auxiliary chamber, which car ries an explosive to be fired by a ham mer inside the lock and give an alarm when the lock is tampered with. Swiss postmen are delighted with a new electric arrangement introduced in some of the cities, by the use of which they send letters to the upper stories by simply placing them in a box. Their weight starts a current, which lifts them aud rings a bell. Machine guns are mounted on a pueumatic-tired motor carriage iu a new English patent, the powder being obtained from oil motors, which will run the carriage at a fair speed on the road and may be geared to the firing mechanism of the guns when in action. With an apparatus called the myo- phoue a French scientist has proved that the nerves may live many hours after the death of the body. The sound in the instrument shows that nerve may act on a muscle, iu a state of electric excitability, without pro ducing more thau simple molecular vibration. A German inventor has produced what he claims to be a burner for acetylene gas, on which soot cannot gather, as is sometimes the case. It is merely a small cup covered by a plate containing an opening corre sponding to the usual bitfmer. This device, it is cl aimed, secures a stronger pressure of gas and a more perfect combustion. Professor Richet says that it takes a man about one-eleventh of a second to think out each note of a musical scale. He explains the practice thgi people will ofiaj* inRww ronrondliig their heads in order to Voatch each minute sound, by the /act that the smallest intervals of sound can be much better distinguished with one ear than with both. Thus the separ ateness of the clicks of a revolving toothed wheel were noted by one ob server when they did not exceed 60 to the second, bat using both ears be could not distinguish them when they occurred oftener than 15 times a sec ond. Among the various ways in which Professor Richet tried to ar rive at conclueions as to the amount of time necessary for realizing any physical sensations or mental impres sion was the touching of the skin re peatedly with light blows from a small hammer. The fact that the blows are separate and not continuous pressure can be distinguished when they follow one another as often as 1000 a sec ond. The sharp sonud of the electric spark from an induction coil was dis tinguished with one ear, when the rate was as high as 500 to the second. The sight is much less ‘keen. When revolved at a speed uo faster than 24 times a second, a disk, half white and half black, will appear gray. We also hear more itpidly than we can count. If a clock-clicking movement runs quicker than ten to the second we can count four clicks, while with 20 to the second we can count only two of them. —St. Louis Globe Democrat. A Startled Mother. A physician of Canal Dover has just performed au extraordinary surg ical operation here by means of elec tricity. A girl of five years of age while romping on the floor acciden tally ran an ordinary sewing needle into hfcr leg at the right knee joint. In attempting to pull it out the father broke off the bit of steel, leaving more than half of it imbedded iu the flesh, and when she was taken to the doctor repeated probing failed to locate the fragment of needle. At the latter’s suggestion the child was taken to the power house of the local electric com pany aud placed ou the dynamo in such a manner that the right knee joint pressed against a powerful mag net of 125 horse power. The little tot was kept almost continuously in this position for eight hoars. The treatment was heroic, bat the joint had become so painful and swollen that the magnet treatment was resorted to in the extremity of saving the limb. This powerful force failed to draw the needle to the surface, and a smaller magnet connected with the dynamo and having its full force was made in such a form that it could be inserted in an incision at the joint. . The baby was chloroformed, the leg laid open with the knife, and the magneLintro duced. When, it was withdrawn the troublesome bit of steel clung to it, and the experiment was a success.— Cleveland (Ohio) Leader. lOC.S&c The report New York city shows 1909 pei erected at a 486. you Youri the lor ■ itM Building Department In first quarter of 1698 new buildings to be estimated cost ct $26,414,- To Cure n Cold In One Day. | Take Laxative Bromo Quinine Tablet?.
