About twenty years ago a steam packet company of Liverpool wished to boy a piece of land which was owned by a “stay-at-home spinster,” as her neighbors described her. She sold her land at a very low price, but insisted upon a clause being Inserted in the agreement giving her the right at any tlmfe during her life to travel with a companion in any of the company’s vessels. When the agreement was closed she sold her furniture and went on board the first outgoing ship belong ing to the packet company. For years this wise spinster lived nearly all the time upon one ship or another, fre quently accompanied by a companion, according to the agreement. This was always a person who otherwise would have been a regular passenger, but who purchased her ticket at reduced rates by paying the spinster instead of ths packet company. The company offered her more than twice the value of the land If she would give up her privilege, but this she would not do. Cleaning Tea Kettle. The inside of a tea kettle may bo kept in fairly good condition by tho use of an oyster shell. Clean'the oyster shell, put it in the kettle aud keep it there. The lime will fasten it self to the shell and leave the sides of the kettle comparatively clean. Each night, however, the kettle should be washed, the oyster shell cleaned, the kettle turned upside down and the shell dried, to be used again in the morning.—Ladies' Home Journal. Paeklng Away Rag*. Have the rugs thoroughly cleaned. Examine them carefully to see that they are not already stung by the moth miller; fold neatly, and put a little gum camphor between each fold. Roll compactly. Take perfectly eleau muslin—either an old sheet or muslin purchased for the purpose—cover the rugs thoroughly and sew them up. Wrap them iu burlap aud put away in a light place. Asparagus Salad—Rub three hard- boiled egg yolks through a sieve. Put them in a bowl with two raw yolks, salt, pepper aud a tablespoonful of prepared mustard; stir with a wooden spoon, and add slowly two gills of salad oil aud a little vinegar, with two tablespoonfuls finely chopped herbs— parsley, tarragon, chives aud shallot This is to be poured over, the Cold boiled asparagus. Mushroom Salad—Cut the mush rooms into small pieces aud cook them in a little olive oil, letting them simmer fifteen minutes. Add some lemon juice and stand on one side uu- til cold. Place the cold mushrooms in a salad bowl and season with salt and pepper, some chopped parsley and a suspicion of onion juice. Cover the whole with a mayonnaise dressing aud Serve. This is delicious. Sweet Pickle of Apples—Apples make a delicious sweet pickle, and here is a good recipe for making them: Do not peel the apples,but core-them, if it is preferred. Cut them in halves and stick three cloves iu each halt. To a pint of best vinegar add three pounds of sugar, and this will make a sufficient amount of syrup for six pounds of apples. Drop in the ap ples and let them cook until you can thrust a straw through them. Gooseberry Tapioca Pudding—Soak one cupful of tapioca over night in oold water. Make a syrup of two capfuls of sugar and half a capful of hot water. When boiling add one quart of cleaned gooseberries and cook until tender. Pour the berries into an earthen dish, drain off the juice and pour over the tapioca. Cook in a double boiler until perfectly cl ear, add the berries, stir well together, turn into the serving dish and set away to cool. Serve very cold with sugar and cream.
