The marriage of the son of M. Deb- lier, the public executioner of France, took place recently before the mayor of the Sixteenth Arrondissemeut, Paris. The ceremony was purely civil in char- aeter, only thirteen witnesses being present. M. Deblier, or, as he is more familiarly known, Monsieur de Paris, not only the most aged official execu tioner in the world, but likewise the one person who had probably put more human beings out of existence than any other living man. There is a sort of gruesome atmosphere of a forbidding character which seems to Burrouud the public executioners of Europe. They are usually men of fine self-culture and education, retir ing in disposition aud plainly respect able bourgeois in their domestic rela tions. Being denied the privilege of the society arouud them by the char acter of their profession, they have a society of their own which is as ex clusive as that of royalties, for they visit each other in ceremonious fashion and intermarry. Thus M. Deblier is j a second cousin by marriage of the headsman of Prussia, and his wile was the daughter of the executioner of Algiers, a descendant of the famous Samson who guillotined Marie An toinette and her royal spouse, Louis XVI. But the sou of the pacsent Monsieur de Paris, Joseph Francois Deblier, has made, as it were, a mor ganatic marriage by seeking his wife— Rosalie Boges—outside the families of the executioners. She was formerly a cigarmaker in one of the government factories. She is twe>nty-one and her husband is thirty-five. . According to the marriage settlement, M. Deblier gives as a dowry to his wife the «um of §10,000. He will probably euc- ceed his father before long. For the last ten years he has been the old gentleman’s assistant in all executions of note. over, this spectacle itself should arouse enthusiasm. But there is more than this. This spectacle is the result of the form of government bequeathed to ns by our ancestors, and that govern ment itself was the first great result of the Declaration of Independence, which was given to the world on the Fourth of July, 1776. Indeed, it is someting worth cele brating, this anniversary of the begin ning of a republic in which such a thing can be accomplished. We appeal, therefore, to our people to take advan tage of this fortnuate opportunity to revive an ancient aud honorable cus tom. Let the Fourth of July be cele brated; let public exercises take place; let ns have an oration, and a parade of the civic and military societies, and wind up the day with a liberal com bustion of gunpowder. It will do us all a wojld of tfoojl. War and Crime. One of the peculiar effects of the war is the reduction in the amonnt of crime. This is especially noted in thq larger cities.
