I 'I I SHOUT ON TAX STAMPS. Several Denominations Unabtalnable and The Supply Totally Inadequate To Tb* Demand. There is much complaint about the failure of the Government to furnish the new revenue stamps in sufficient quantities to supply the needs of the city. When the First National Bank accepted the agency they notified Collector Webster that they would need several thousand dollars’ worth of the stamps to begin with. They re- cei\*> >wever, only $800 worth £st consignment. These Avught up in a short tine after they were placed on sale and more were ordered; but so far the ank has failed to get more than *Moo worth all told. The con sequence is that they have b4en compelled to piece out and give . r oustoniers only a few at a ‘me, and several denominations are not to be had at all. These ar< H 1? sma ^ er proprietary stamps an the larger denominations of ine documentary stamps. As a natural result the druggist have been much hampered in their busi ness by their failure to secure what they need, and the banks and other institutions which have commer cial paper of large denominations to stamp. They have made out so far with two-cent stamps pasted on m large numbers, but they cover the backs of the papers, are hard to cancel repeatedly and are gen erally undesirable for the purpose. President Simonds said yesterday tf*t he had made a number of to learn why the stamps were tixget, but so far had Found In a Pine Log. Yesterday while sawing into an old piae tree, Mr. B. C. Lambert came across a very curious relic. In the but of the tree, which was hollow, there was found an old flint rifle, supposed to have been used during the war of Revolution. The rifle is a very curious looking object, and should certainly be sent to a museum. The pine grew on Mr. Robert Muldrow’s planta tion. Brunson before the State Press Association, the Greenville News has the following to say: H. A. Brunson, of the Times. Messenger, Florence, read a strong and logically conceived thesis on “newspaperethics.” He explained the relationship which should exist between newspaper and newspaper and between news paper and their patrons. He de nounced in scathing terms ‘’yellow journalism” and made a plea for high plane” newspapers. Two car loads of negro soldiers passed through this morning. Johnnie Cooper and Blossom Hunter, two negroes, had-a difficul ty last night, which came near proving fatal to Hunter. It seems that Hunter stepped upon Cooper’s foot, when the latter retaliated by drawing a knife and cutting a long and bloody gash in Hunter’s throat. The wounded negro was immediately carried to Dr. Cov ington, who finally succeeded in stopping the flow of blood. Darby’s K-O-LA-TE revives de pressed spirits.
