Charleston, June 20.—The pre- liminary hearing in the case of the United States against John New ham, charged with being one of the mob who burned the postoffice at Lake City and killed the post master and several of the latter's family, did not take place to-day j before Commissioner J.W. Smith. 1 he case was to have been called, but it was not taken up in conse quence of the absence of a material witness who has been sent for, and \vho is expected to arrive in the city in a day or two. As was stated in the State Sun- day, Newham has turned State’s evidence and wholesale arrests are now expected. Inspectors Bulla and Moyes worked up such a clear case against Newham that, seeing the hopelessness of his course, he is said to have done the best thing for himself and “peached.” SOME ARE OUR OWN PEOPLE AND SOME ARE NOT. fln*y Cokj,, and k*> and do Many Thluva and .11 Dive* ii* tMeamira to Hear of Their Movement*.
