London, June 2.—The Madrid correspondent of the Morning Post says: Senor Leon y Castillo, the Spanish ambassador to France, at his recent conferences with the Qeen Regent and Senor Sagasta, was officially charged to ask the powers to intervene to obtain peace on such terms as would pro tect the honor of Spain. The am bassador will urge for a reason tor such intervention the danger of loss of trade to the powers themselves in the event of the continuance of the war. Political and diplomatic circles in Madrid believe that Cas tillo will succeed. STILL WAITING AT TAMPA. Tampa, Fla., June a—With the establishment of General army headquarters at Tampa and with Major-General Miles on the ground ! personally directing the move ments of the army, affairs here have again taken on a considera ble degree of activity, but no em barkation of troops has as yet taken place from this point. A1 though the work of preparing the army for the campaign still con tinues with unabated vigor, until the fate 4 of the powerful Spanish fleet is settled no orders for the in vasion of Cuba are expected. Ad- miral Cervera is apparently the unknown quantity in this problem of war. When he is disposed of it is probable the opportunity the army has so long waited for will come, and come quickly. Col. J. K. Dorst. who is in charge of the recent expedition on the steamer Florida, describes the condition of the women and child ren as pitiable in the extreme. DEWEY THANKS THEM. Washington, June j—Presi dent McKinley to-day sent a mes sage to congress transmitting the reply of Admiral Dewey to the res olution of congress which tendered him thanks for his victory at Manila. One company was lacking, and in order to make up the required number without further delay the depart ment transferred company B of Thompsou’s independent battal ion, the Sumter Light Infantry, to the regiment.
