Key West, May 26.-4 p. m.— The soldiers and sailors, especially Northern«r», are inflamed >by the report that a marine has keen mwrdered by a negro and they are hooting the negro to lynch him V Court Proceeding.*. > The arguments of counsel being completed, the case of tlje State vs. Dr. William Ilderton, aggra vated assault and battery, went to the jury late yesterday afternoon. Meantime court adjourned and this morning a sealed verdict was ren« dered as follows: “Guilty of as sault and battery.” The sentence of the court was, ten day’s impris onment or $30.00 fine. The State vs. James Abraham, indicted for murder, is now occu pying the attention of the court. Late yesterday afternoon the grand jury having completed its work was discharged. Having visited the county offices at our last term of court did not deem it necessary to re-investigate them at this term as we expect to give them a thorough investigation at the fall term. We have visited the county jail and find the prisoners well fed and the jail in good sanitary condition. We have visited chain gang and find the prisoners well kept and doing good work for the county. We find that on April 7th, 1898, W. B. DuBose, county supervisor, approved a certain account No. 483 in favor of W. E. Turner for $ 15.94 for lumber; said account not being properly verified ; and we find that A. H. Turner, one of the county commissioners, was interested in said account, although it was made out in the name of W. E. Turner, This account appears to have been sworn to before A. H. Turner by W. E. Turner, but no date appears to the affidavit, and A. H. Turner signs the fiat without stating in what official capacity he took the oath. We call this to the attention of the court for such action as the court thinks proper. And we furnish as witnesses W. E. Turner and Thos. Hewit. Some time ago several valuable articles were given to the Hope Fire Company through merchants of our city. At the time it was the purpose of the Company to have a fair at which these articles were to be disposed of, but up to tjiis date nothing has been done. It has been suggested by a prominent merchant that, in case the company has given out the idea of so disposing of these arti cles, they be converted into cash and sent to Columbia as a donation from our town for the regimental band. Funds are being raised with which to properly equip the band, the towns in the State are helping, but so fai Florence is not repre sented; and, should, of course, the Hope company decide not to use the aforementioned articles, it would indeed be an act of grace ful courtesy to use them in the way suggested. Will- cox—To-night 7.80 O’clock la the Hour—The Graduates. The commencement exercises of the city schools will begin to-night at the opera house. Hon. C. A. Woods, of Marion, will deliver the literary address, and immediately afterward P. A. Willcox, Esq., will deliver the medal to the first honor graduate. The exercises to-night will be gin promptly at 7.30 o’clock. The pupils of the school will not march to the opera house in a body, and the very little folks are not re quired to attend. In accordance with the usual custom, the front seats in the opera house will be reserved for school pupils. The medal for the first honor graduate is of solid gold and beau tiful in design, and one of the fol lowing eight, all of whom have successfully completed the course of study, will be the fortunate re cipient: Mr. Harry Heard, Misses Marie Brunson, Grace Covington (selected course), Lalla Hepburn, * me T quite sick for the past three months, is able to be out again. The Chain Gang under Mr. S. J. Lynch is now working at Tim monsville. Mose Tillman, one of the con victs, died of typhoid faver on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock, and was buried yesterday morning. There upon the board went into an elec tion of superintendent for the coming session, and the result was the unanimous re-election of Sup erintendent J. L. Mann, who dur ing the past session has served the people of Florence so faithfully and so well. The schools are to be heartily congratulated. In addition the board ordered that the election of teachers be held on June 6, and applications must be in by that time.
