At the end of the action Com- nodoreDewey anchored his fleet n the bay before Manila, and sen) i message to Governor General \ugusti announcing the inaugura tion of the blockade, and adding that if a shot was fired against his ships he would destroy every bat tery about Manila. The position occupied by the Spaniards, the support which their ships received from the land batteries, and the big guns they had ashore gave them an enor mous advantage. Therefore, when it is considered that the Spaniards lost over 600 men in killed and wounded, that all their ships, amounting to about 14, were de stroyed, and that their naval ar senal at Cavite was also destroyed with its defenses, it will become apparent that the victory of the American commodore is one of the most complete and wonderful achievements in the history of naval warfare. Not a man on board the Amer ican fleet was killed, not a ship was damaged to any extent,. and only six men were injured slightly on board the Baltimore. This great achievement is quite as much due to the generalship of Commodore Dewey as to the fact that the American guaners, ships, and guns are superior to anything in the Same line afloat anywhere. Credit must also be given to the fullest extent to the officers under ‘Commodore Dewey for, to a man, they seconded their gallant com mander in every way possible am thus helped hini earn the laurels which are so justly his. H-, May 1—A Randall, chief engineer of the dis- paten boat McCulloch, which brorght the official report of the Manila engagement in Hong Kong The cause of his death was not given. Chief Engineer Randal was born near Portsmouth sixty-two years ago. A widow and two children, who reside in Ports mouth, survive him. IS DISCUSSED •MANILA IS HELPLESS. * Loudon, Mav 8.—The Hong Kong correspondent of the Daily Chronicle says: Manila is helpless and sur rounded by the insurgents. The blockade is effective. The Amer icans have occupied Corregidor island, and Commodore Dewey has exercised consummate judg ment and rare ability in main taining a distance at once safe for his fleet and deadly to the Span iards. London, May 9.— The Hong Kong correspondent of the Daily Mail gives the following addition al details: “There was an act of treachery on the part of a Spanish ship which lowered her flag and then tired at a boat’s crew sent to take possession of her. The United States Senate has given orders lor a memorial sword for Admiral Dewey and medals for his officers and men. WILL RESIST AT MANILA. Washington, May 9.—4.10p. m. A dispatch from Madrid states that Spanish troops will he sent to resist Dewey’s invasion of Manila by land torces. MONTGOMERY SAFE. Washington, May 9.—5 p. m — It is officially reported that the Montgomery has arrived at Mole St. Nicholas. was shot and killed ut about 12.30 to day by James Abraham on Coit street, near the residence of Mr. J. B. Douglas. The circumstances of the all air are as follows: John Hooks and Jamas Abraham were involved in a difficulty and old man Green interfered as a peacemaker whereupon Abraham turned on Green and shot him in the right breast. Green lingered a few min utes and died and Abraham flf>d. Mr. Tom Dennis, Willis Collins, Allen Green, J. L. Smart, and Eze kiel Myers went in hot pursuit and after a lively chase Abraham was overtaken in the woods hock of Dr. Covington’s farm. Abraham hid his pistol in a hollow stump and Smart, noticing where hV had hid it, found the pistol and made the arrest. All of these parties deserve credit for the capture of Abraham. Abraham it is claimed has al ready served out a sentence in the penitentiary for killing another man. He is now in jail and will no doubt pay the penalty tor this last murder on the gallows. The t dead man is respeetble and was very well thought of by the white people of this community. Notice.
