We extend sympathy to our sis ter city of Rock Hill. We, too, have suffered from fire, and can realize tbe awfulness of (ho calami ty that has fallen npon her. Spain is no fool, and is not dis posed to rush to certain defeat,. This is a thing, thinks she, it were better to approach slowly. Nor is Uncle Sam a fool—far from it. It were bettor, thinks he, to be fully ready for the war when it comes, that is, should it come. The first sentence of a Washing ton dispatch publish in the morn ing’s pnpers reads like this: “The opinion almost universally held in Washington to-night by lead ing public men and diplomats is, that the crisis will reach itsclimax this week, and that the question of war or peace will be determined within the next seven days.” We hope so, most devoutly hope so. Heaven knows, seven days longer ought to settle the matter one way or the other. HUNDREDS DROWNED. A Trick of the Trade. The Kansas City Journal says: “A flour merchant of Edgar let j tbe atory get out that while he was stooping over his flour bin a $150 diamond ring had slipped off his finger into the flour, lie appeared to be greatly exercised over tbe loss, got a notice in the local paper, but finally announced with a sigh that he would have to give it up; that the ring was in tbe flour some where; that he supposed it would turn up in a sack of flour, but he had no idea what one. Well, you ought to have seen tbe boom that guileless man had in tbe flour trade. For the next w^k he bid to hire extra help to fill sacks out of that bin- One man who never bought a sack from him before came in end laid in a winter’s supply. And the smootu mer chant whistled softly as he filled the sacks and winked his other eye.” A Horrible Dlaasterst Shawueetown, 111.— Cutued by the HreakluK of a Levee. St. Louis, April, 3.—A special to the Republic from Girard, III., says: A telephone message' has been received here from Shawuee- towu, 111., saying that at 4:30 o’clock this afternoon the levee above the city broke and the city is inundated. The water has backed up for five miles and rush ed down upon the city like a tidal wave. After the message was re ceived telephone and telegraph communication with Shawneetown was buddtmiy cut off, which leads to confirm the report. Nothing more has been learned. It is rumored that over 200 lives were lost, although it is believed this estimate is too high. Chicago, April 4.—At 12:30 to night the operator in the loug distance telephone company’s of fice at Mt. Vernon, lud., informed tbe Associated Press that the esti mate on the loss of life at Shaw- nee town was at that hour two hundred. Mount Vernon is but 30 miles from Shawneetown, and the information on which the es timate is based is believed to be reliable. The operator stated that the company’s wire to the strick en city failed soon after 4 o’clock this afternoon. At that hour it was known that the dam was giv ing way. By 8 o’clock it was known in Mt. Vernon that many people had been drowned, the estimate then being one hundred. A relief boat, bearing food, blankets and surgeons was started down the river and was expected to reach Shawnee town before morning. People from Mt. Vernon and the sur rounding country beseiged the telephone offices for tidings from relatives and friends in the flood ed town. No attempt at an accurate list of the lost was possi ble. Louisville, April 3.—A special to the Courier-Journal from Evansville, Ind., says the Shaw- ueetown disaster will amount to over 500 dead, and possibly 1,000. The situation of the town was much like Johnstown, though the population was smaller. The town is now under 20 feet of water. Subscribe for this paper. Chamberlain's CourIi Keiuetly Always Proves Effectnal. There are no better medicines on the market than Chamberlain’s. We have used the Cough Remedy when all others failed, and in every instance it proved effectual. Almost daily we hear the virtues of Chamberlain’s remedies ex tolled by those who have used them.
