Captain Lawson D. Melton, of Columbia, has been appointed United States Marshal for South Carolina. Commenting, the Co lumbia State aayc, and ws agree with it, ‘‘The appointment is a distinct advance upon those which preceded it” The Hon. C. S. McCall, of Ben- nettsville, tells the Wilmington Messenger that “the farmers of 8«nth Carolina have determined to considerably reduce the acreage in cotton the coming season. He thinks the redaction will not be less than 10 per cent, as compared with the acreage planted last year.” It is ta be hoped that he is right.— News and Courier. Indeed it is to be hoped so. ‘‘Less sotton and more foodstuffs,” should be the motto of the farmer in this year of our Lord, 1898. Rev. E. Edwards, pastor of the English Baptist Church at Miners- ville, Pa., when suffering with rheumatism, was advised to try Chamberlain’s Pain Balm.
