When Rucker threw opeu doors this morning the rush great and all day the store been crowded. his was has A Charleston mao has givtn out the important information that the world will come to an end on July 6, 1899, at precisely 6 p. m. The meetings at the Msthodist church are growing in interest. Mr. Schoolfield is a powerful speaker, his discourses being clear, forcible and thought-producing. Our merchants readily ac quiesced iu the proposal to close their store at 7 o’clock, p. m., dur ing the meeting at the Methodist ehurch, to their credit be it said. The Sumter Freeman says it “will support ouly those candi dates for mayor and aldermen who stand opposed to levying a license tax indiscriminately upon all classes of business.” We regret the typographical er ror in yesterday’s paper. “House keeping” was the word intended aud written, aud that it appeared otherwise was, we know, inexcusa ble. Again, we regret it and hasten at the first opportunity to make the correction. Capt. J. S. He< k Loaea Mia .Dwelling by Fire—Nearly alltbe Furniture Saved. The large two-story dwelling of Captain J. S. Beck situated iu East Florence at the corner of Gaillard and Cheeves streets, was completely destroyed by fire this morning between the hours of teu aud eleven o’clock. Nearly all of the household goods were saved, a few articles perhaps being burned, but the building u a total loss. Sixteen hundred dollars of insurance was carried on the house and the fur niture was inured for $500. The fire was first discovered on the roof of the house near the chimney, but owing to the dis tance it was several minuces be fore the alarm could be given. As soon as they possibly could the fire companies reached the scene but the fire had gained too much headway, and despite their gallant efforts, could uot be put out. The wind was blowing directly foward the west, and for a time the residences of Mr. J. L. Neeley and Mr. L. H. Meares seemed in imminent danger. Water was thrown freely on the roofs, how ever, and farther destruction was prevented. It is supposed that the fire caught from a falling spark, as the flames were first seen on the FLORENCE. 8 C.. Evidences on High Living. A member of the police force came across a boy the other day who was wheeling home a load of oyster cans and bottles, says the New Orleans Times-Deniocrat, and curious to know what use the lad could put them to, he made a di rect inquiry. “Going to throw them over into our back yard,” replied the boy. I took two loads home yesterday. “But what do you use them for?” “It’s a trick of the family,” grinned the lad. “How trick?” “I’d just as lief tell,” continued the boy, as he spit on his haads to resume hold on the barrow. “We are going to have some relashuns come in from the country. We may not have much to eat, but if they see these cans and bottles and boxes, they’ll think we’ve had isters, champagne, gigs and nuts till we’ve got tired of ’em, and are living on bread and taters for a healthy change.” The officer scratched his ear like a man wh» had received a new idea. Our pension list exc&eds all Germany’s army cost by more than $40,000,000 a year, and is $30,000 (MX) more than that of WWPnpww uwi gin ling Europe and Asia the Baltic to the Yellow Sea ajtid the Indian Ocean, exceed toe sum which, 30 years after the close of close of the war, we still annually pay over to our pensioners. Rus sia’s military burden, all told, is $176,942,600; our pension list is quite equal to this, but, with the cost of our small army of 25,000 meu added, the aggregate exceeds it. Our military expenditures are thus greater than these of any country in the world.—New York Tribune. HluiUler Trouble*. The bladder was created for one purpose, namely, a receptacle for the urine, and as such it is not liable to any form of disease ex cept by one of two ways. The first way is from imperfect actioa of the kidneys. The second way, is from careless local treatment of other diseases. BAMIM.E BKNT FKKK. Unhealthy urine from unhealthy kidneys is the chief cause of blad der troubles. It is comfortable to know that Dr. Kilmer’e Swamp Root fulfills every wish in quickly curing bladder and urinary trou bles. It corrects frequent calls, inability to bold urine aud scald ing or stinging pain in passing it, or bad effects following use of li quor, wine or beer, aud overcomes that unpleasant necessity of being compelled to get up mauy times duriug the night to urinate. The mild and extraordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp Root is soon realized. It stands the highest for its wonderful cures of the most distressing cases. If you need a medicine Taking a commercial view of it, the result of a possible war be tween the United States and Spain will turn on a purely financial question—can our abundaucs or her poverty buy a bigger fleet—is our gold or her credit what the builders of warships want? There fore even according,to the jingoes, it would be suicide for Spain to go to war, aud while they charge her with diabolical crimes reach ing ail the way from El Cid to Alfonso, not one has yet insinu ated that she is or ever has beeu a fool. The conclusion, there fore, is inevitable that we shall have no war till the jingoes do the fighting.—Ex. lar. sample bottle pud pamphlet, both sent free by msil.
