Spain is also gettiug ready, but the war cloud might be blacksr. War, like marriage, should not bs sntered into hastily. In war the cause is worthy of oouaidera* tion. Give your thoughtful attention to the article on advertising which is published in another column. It contains some solid truths for advertisers and concludes with the following words: “Tell somi- thing—tell it true, and in the best papers—and it will pay svery time.” President McKinley’s cabinet yesterday discussed the Lake City horror, and increased tho govern ment’! reward to $1,500 in each case, that ia to aay, for apprehend ing the burners of the postoffice and the murderers of Baker and 4WI iiiildi Tto laYwaaiat tends making every effort to bring the guilty parties to justice. A Georgia Girl's Opinion. A little Georgia schoolgirl was askad for a composition on “The Confederate Veteran. ” A few day■ thereafter he handed in the follow ing: “The Confederate veteran is one that fought, bled and died for his country. He is sometimes on one leg and sometimes on two. The State gives him enough pension to keep in tobacco. Then the State builds hiss a heme and sells the home before he can get it. My pa says he is a veteran. He was wounded by having one leg sawed off in a Confederate sawmill while making coffins to bury soldiers in. The State don’t help my pa much, and my pa says damn the State!”— Ex. KEADTH1M. Thor* U Maoh I* It of InUroat *n4 V*l«* to Advertiser*. ! Copyrighted by pbg*. AwttR Rate*. | Iv*ry advertisement that goes into a newspaper ought to contain some definite information. People are hungry far knowl edge, It ia an inquisitive age. The advertiser who supplies the most pertinent information will get the most trade, other things being equal. Every advertisement should tell the why of something. If a price is low—why? If a quality is ex cellent—why? If better nutmegs come from Connecticut than In diana—why? Give a reason for every thing. The small boy of to-day opens his drum to see where tbs noise comes from and what makes it He dissects his watch to find the “tick.” Men are only boys grown np. It is easy enough to make an advertisement interesting if one only thinks a little. The adver tising of the future will always be so. Advertirements are read more thau ten years ago, because they are more readable. The Wanna- maker advertising in Philadel phia contains as fine writing and is ss intensely entertaining as any other column in the papers. Advertising is becoming more] and more honest every day. It pays better every day. When people really understand that sd vartising is a nscessary and legit imate part of every business, that it is merely a store bulletin, it will pay still better. It is facts that people want I have heard a merchant say: “Oh, it don’t pay to advertise, because people don’t believe the ads. Mr So and-So always lies in his ads and peopie measure us by his standard.” He was wrong, of course. .Peo ple soon find oat the truth-telling place, and trade gravitates that way with abiolute certainty. Tell soaethiug—tell it true, and in the beet papers—and it will pay every time. At a tim>! like this we should help, aot hinder; we should think, uot yell* The United States must take no action unwarranted by the facts and uot justified by law aud rea son. If war be necessary, need we prove our courage by burstiug our luugs in advance? Need we have ghost dances and fierce boast ing to make us fight? There are only a few men who know the exact status of the Span ish situation. We cannot, decide as wissly on what should '• > dons as they, because we g*- », and they know. We gave t.em the power they hold; ^ l «y not let them exercise >i? At least, we cannot, we can only open our mouths to put our feet in a hole. Whether we like it or not, Con gress aud the President must act We can ouly talk, and hysteria is uot sense, nor the loud demagogue a wise statesman. We cannot think while ve are talking—the two efforts are incompatible at the same time. Patriotism is not sensation, and loud professions prove nothing but an empty or a vicious head. Will red ink and scare heads kill Spaniards or float the Maine? Can manufactured telegrame guide us to wise actien? Be Btill aud think till we oan not. t "V.. Not Always Under*too*. A fact often overlooked, or not al- » understood, ia that woman suffer as much from distressing kidney and bladder troubles as the men. The womb is situated back of and very close to the bladder, and for that rea son any distre^, disease or inconve nience manifested in the kidneys, back, bladder or urinary passage is of ten, by mistake, attribute to female weakness or womb trouble of some sort. The error is easily made and may be as easily Avoided by setting urine aside for twenty-four hours; a sediment or settling is evidence that your kid neys and bladder need doctoring. If you have pain or dull aching in the back, pass water too frequently, or scanty supply, with smarting or burn ing,—these are also convincing proofs of kidney trouble. If you have doctor ed without benefit, try Dr. Kilmer’s Swamp-Koot, the great kidney remedy. The mild and the extraordinary effect will surprise you. It stands thehigh- est for its wonderful cures. If you take a medicine you should take the best. At druggists fifty cents and one dollar.
