Washington, Feb. 24.—The post office department has directed In spector Williams at Chattanooga, Tenu., to detail another inspector te proceed to Lake City, 8. C , ann assist Mr. Moye, who arrived tnerc last night, to conduct the iuvesti* gatiou into the murder of the post master, Baker, and the buruing of the postoffioe. A singular coincidence in the case of Baker is that on February 21st, the day and night of which ha was murdered, he wrote a letter to tha postoffioe department say ing that his life had been threat ened and asking that the govern meut extend some protection to him. This letter came to hand yesterday afternoon. Senator McLauri.i, of South Carolina, was among Postmaster General Gary’s callers to-day and expressed his horror at tbe crime iu^which Baker lost his life. He asked that tbe department use every means at its command to discover tha perpetrators of the outrage and assured General Gary that he would do everything in his power to assist him. A dispatch was received from In spector Moye at Lake City this af ternoon saying that he was pur suing the investigation directed by the department. There was no clue to the perpetrators and no part of tha postoffioe property had been recovered. The coroner’s jury which is in vestigating the crime has adjourn ed until 12 o’clock Saturday. -— ^ Id a recent letter from Wash ington, D. C., to an old friend, Major G. A. Studer, for twenty years United States Consul at Singapore, says; ‘‘While at Dee Moiues I became acquainted with a liniment known as Chamber Iain’s Pain Balm, which I found excellent against rheumatism at well aa against soreness of the throat and chest (giuug me much easier breathing.) I had a touch of pneumonia early this week, and two applications freely applied to the throat and chest relieved me at once. I would not lie w about it for anything,” Fur sale f»y ail j druggists and medicine dealers. Skin Diseases. Clerk’s Sale. HTATE OK SOUTH CAROLINA, COUNTY OF Fi-OHENCB. U. H.
