It is true that Baker, the post master at Lake City was black. 1 is likewise true that the people o the town objected to his appoint ment and that the department at Washington appointed him ever the strongest kind of protests. Yet all of this is not even the faintest shadow of exense for the dastardly crime committed. The details are sickening. Baker’s body a charred mass, the body of the helpless in fant still somewhere in the ashes, the other members of the family painfully, and some of them, it is feared, fatally, wounded. What a dismally drear and damnably dark record is this to be sent throughout the length aud breadth of this fair land where culture sits enthroned and civilization has reached its highest stage of developmeat, aad what a blasting and eternal shame it is that men of South Car- •lina, the proud, should bring this reproach upon their native State! Courage—is there nothing in the name? Forbearance—has it ceased to be a virtue ? Law—has all respect for it been wiped out? Human ity—has the devilish blood-thirsti ness of the barbarian and the savage come to take its place right it} our midst? In the name of high heaven, whither are we drift ing, whither are we drifting? y» James Braveboy, also colored, last December, and at that time Chief Postoffice Inspector Hamlet sent an inspector by the name of Barre to Lake City to make a re- port of the affair. Since that time the trouble has been so great that other inspectors have been sent there to report as to the best way for the department to proceed in the matter of remedying the trou ble The last inspector made a recommendation that the office be discontinued, so unsatisfactory was the state of affairs there. The department, it seems, was deter mined not to have their appointee forced out of the office and it is said that officials were considering the proposition of discontinuing the office, temporarily at least.—R. Washington, February 22.—The report of the lynching of the negro postmaster Frazier B. Baker and his daughter at Lake City, S. C., created the biggest kind of a sen sation when it became known among South Carolinians now in Washington. Though they knew that a state of bad feeling had been existing in and around the little South Carolina town, they were greatly surprised to hear of the sensational story of his being lynched with his daughter. “My God, it can’t be true,” said Congressman Elliott, when he was told of the occurrence. “Such hot headed action dnes not repre sent the feeling in South Carolina, I am sure.” All of the South Carolinians, from the Congressmen down to the spoil-hunting politicians who are here after patronage, greatly deplore the affair, and some of them absolutely discredit the story. To-day being a holiday the post office department was closed and the postoffice authorities seen to night have no official notification of the lynching They simply said the matter would be thoroughly looked into, and the guilty parties punished, but in th • abs. ..cc of any official information would not discuss the tragedy. Postmaster Baker was appoint ed at Lake City last September, and at the tiim' of his appoint ment them w.-te a general protest aiising from the white people of the community. Baker was ap pointed on the recommendation of E. H. Dcas, the colored deputy collector of internal revenue of Scuth Carolina, who is in Wash- iagtoa now, and who is greatly stirred up over the summary kill ing of two of his race. He de nounces the set and is disposed to pat the blame on the Administra tion, which he accuses of having been vary cowardly in the matter. Deas says that an attempt was made to kill Frazier and his depti- lu a recent letter from Wash ington, D. C., to an old friend, Major G. A. Studer, for twenty S ears United States Consul at ingapore, says; “While at Des Moines I became acquainted with a liniment known as Chamber lain’s Pain Balm, which I found excellent against rheumatism as well as against soreness of tbe throat and chest (giving me much easier breathing.) I had a touch of pneumonia early this week, and two applications freely applied to the throat and chest relieved me at once. I would not be without it for anything.” For sale by all druggists and medicine dealers. Cotton seed meal and hulls for sale at Oil Mill—Orders left at ray office will have prompt atten tion.
