Forest fires are raging in differ ent sections of the county to-day as a result of yesterday’s wind storm. A perfect symoon raged all day yesterday and continued until about 12 o’clock at ni^ht. The wind blew from about 36 miles to 50 miles an hour. The most se cure houses were filled with dust that the wind blew in throngh the window facings and under the doors. Mrs. H. A. Wells, Miss Hattie Mayes and Mr. O B. Nettles left this morning for Dillon to attend the marriage of Mr. John Nettles of Mayesville to Miss Annie Cop- pedge of Red Springs, N. C. Mr. John Nettles is a brother of Mis. Wells and Mr. O. B. Nettles. Mr. King of Wilmington, N. C., . is in town to-day looking after his son Young King who is at the Coast Line Hospital. Young King had his foot amputated by Dr. Jas. Evans a few days ago, the result of an accident sustinaed Sunday night. King is doing well. Mr. Louis Tedder who has been clerl* at the Florence dispensary for a long time left to-day for Tallahassee, Fla., to take charge of the interests of Dr. J. C. Wil liamson. Mr. Tedder left in a covered hack and will make the entire distance by private convey ance. Jen nings the Ladies Aid Society of the Methodist church will give that r.ew and unique entertainment called the “Klondike Social.” The parlor will be appropriately deco rated in yellow, and flower pets, boxes, etc. placed here and there will constitute the claims “to be staked off and worked.” In these claims nuggets can be found if digged for. A lirtle girl clad in yeliow will present each person at the door with a shovel with which to dig. The one who uneaths the largest number of nuggets will re ceive a prize, and of course the time honored booby w ill have a place. Ten cents is the price of ad mission. A delightful musical program will be a feature of the evening, and in addition salads, sandwiches and coffee will be served for the small sum of ten tents: In short the cost will be ten cents for admission and ten cents for supper. F'riday evening at 8 30 o’clock. Havana, Feb. 16.—The wildest consternation prevails in Havana. The wharves are crowded with thousands of people. It is be lieved the explosion occurred in a small powder magazine. At a quarter of 11 o’clock what remains of the Maine is still burn ing. Capt. Sigsbee and the other of ficers have been saved. It is es timaied that over 100 of the crew were killed, but it is impossible as yet to give exact details. The prospective stir over the matter of the dispositien of the samples of liquor sent to the State Board of Control, which was thought to have ended on Monday when the senate killed the Verner idvestigation resolution, was re vived yesterday morning when it became known that the senate had reconsidered its action and adopted the resolution. And now the in vestigation will likely proceed in the short space of time allowed it. But the sample matter is not the only one in which members figure that is desired to be investigated. Yesterday morning another resolu tion looking to ascertain to what extent members and attaches of the general assembly have been patronizing blind tigers was pre sented and adopted. And still another resolution was presented but it was not read through. It had something to say about mem bers '“monkeying.” The house devoted its attention to bills and matters from yesterday morn .e’clor.k de< noon session. During the day the bill of Senator Ragsdale requiring passenger trains to stop at all sta tions (and regulating their sched ules! was killed. Otherwise the session was most uneventful. The house took up the senate joint resolution to relieve J. S. McCall, county treasurer of Flor ence county, of liability for a bal ance of $138.58, county funds, lost by Coffin’s Bank. Mr. Kennedy amended so as to include $644 lost in the Bank of Carolina by W. W. Grayson, clerk of court. There was quite a fight over it. The amendment was agreed to, but the resolution was not finally passed. A bill to amend t ie act amend ing the law relating to the hunting of deer, so as to extend the time for hunting deer in Charleston and Florence counties was passed.— The State Feb. 15. Mr. J. H.
