Ernest Gary, Presid ing Judge: The grand jury for the January and February term, 1898, respect fully submit the following report: After disposing of the bills of in dictment, we proceeded to examine *the various offices, aud find them neatly kept and properly equipped for the transaction ot business. Me Leod for assault and battery and for aot allowing the right to put up witnesses and otherwise make his defense; and convicting him with out allowing him this right; and we give as witnesses, W. B. Oliver, C. L. Farmer, M. D. Charles, ami' C. N. Hewitt. We present the superintendent and guard of county chain gang tor neglect of duty and recommend that they be removed by the proper authorities. We recommend that the cause way on Lake Swamp between Tim- monsville and Florence be made wider.
