Blackwell, to be hung in Lib lington on,October the 13tb; just oue month and two days from to day. Purvis is the third man sen tenced to be hung in Harnettsince the formation of that county. There have been no executions them, however, the sentence of the former two having been com muted. Purvis will be brought here this afternoon on the A. C. L. 4.40 o’clock train and placed in Cum berland county jail for safe keep ing until the day of execution. Comptroller-General James Nor ton are the candidates for Congress and Messrs. J. P. The fall term of the circuit court for Florence county con vened this morning. Judge I. D. Witherspoon is presiding, and So licitor Jno. 8. Wilson and Stenog rapher L. I. Parrott are at their posts of duty. In the absence of the foreman D. H. Hamby, Mr. W. H. Keith was chosen to act in that capacity. Judge Witherspoon delivered his charge to the grand jury and then the work began. The entire morning hour was taken up with the case of the State vs. R. J. and Lewis Rollins, indicted for rescuing alcoholic li quors from constables. Immedi ately after dinner the jury ren dered a verdict of not guilty. After dinner the State vs. S. K. Pate, assault and battery with intent to kill, was taken np and is now occupying the atten tion of the court. He attributed the fact to improved sanitiry conditions.
