Jailor Denhis has a force of bauds from his hostelry at work to-day cleaning up the Court House preparatory to the conven ing of court uext week. They are scrubbing the floor and otherwise brightening things up- Three rolls of new hemp matting are on hand, and after the clean ing process is ended the court room will be re-carpeted. The criminal docket for this term is very heavy, and it is probable that the court of sessions will continue well into the second week. Eight or ten prisoners are in jail and a number are out on bail. There is work ahead for the grand jury and the solicitor. - ^ .♦ — New York Cotton Market. Apply at this office. « Old Newspapers for sale. What He Expected. The Captain of one of the big schooners that bring ice from the Kennebec to Washington tells a story of an Irishman he shipped. Pat wanted to get from Washing ton to Norfolk and had no money. His story excited the sympathy of the shipmaster, who finally agreed to let him work hie passage, says the Post of that city. Pat was willing, but densely ig norant of all things maritime, and no real sea duty fell to him until the vessel was sailing down Chesa peake Bay with a fair wiud and pleuty of searoom. The Captain then told Pat to take a turn at lookout forward, aod instructed him to promptly report anything he might see. It was a clear uight, aud soon after the lookout took his position he sang out: " “Ah, Captain 1” “Well, Pat.” “There’s something out here foreninst the boat.” “What it it,” said the Captain, lowest Pat’s seafaring knowledge, the lights of an approaching steam er being visible. “I raly couldn’t eay for shure, ear,” says Pat, “but I sushpect its a drug store. Numberless anecdotes are re lated of the eccentricities and char acteristic acts of Rev. Lorenztr Dow, the famous itinerant Meth odist preacher. Mr. Collins re lates that when he was a widower, he said to his congregation one day at the close of his sermon: “I am a-candidate for matri mony; and if there is any woman in this audience who is willing to marry me, I would thank her to rise.’’ A woman rose very near the pul pit, and another in a distant part of the house. Mr. Dow paused a moment, then said: “There are two; I think this one near me rose first; at any rate, I will have her for my wife.” This woman was in good stand ing and possessed of considerable property. Sheriff Pope, of Harnett, and Deputy Sheriff Autry, of Cumber- and, left for Lillington this morn ing in charge of Edgar Purvis, the accused murderer of flagman Blackwell, and Ed. Lomax, the principal witness against Purvis, the trial of the latter having been set for this week at Harnett Su perior Court. On the same train was Dr. China, of Sumter, in pos session of the bullet which killed Blackwell and which he extracted from the wound, after first having had to exhume the body. The bullet, we understand, is of the same calibre as those used in Pur vis’ pistol. Taken to North Carolina. The sheriff of Wilson County, N. C , arrived in the city last night and took to North Carolina with him. Willis McKenzie, the man caught by Sheriff McLendon yesterday. McKenzie had escaped from the Wilson county chain gaug- Successful Revival. ^ The revival at Cumberland M. E. Church, Coit street, closed on Sunday night with a grand jubilee service.
