Elias Gee, a colored man charged with poisoning his wife, and who has been a fugitive from justice for some time, was arrested ia Hartsville a few days ago. Sheriff R. McLendon sent for him last night and he is now taking things easy at the county jail under the watchful eye of Mr. Dennis. The town of Dillon, S. C. de clares its independence of the con stitution and laws of South Caro lina and enacts laws of its own. The town council cf Dillon has passed an ordinance licensing orig inal package stores at $500 and fixing a peualty for violations at a fine of pot less than $20 or im- prisonmeat not less than 30 days. The court house was a busy look ing place this morning. A quan tity of tobacco was left ou hand by R. F. Broadaway <k Co., who a short time ago conducted a smoking to- haoco faetory here and this morn ing the sheriff sold it at auction. After the sale four or five hands were kept busily at work several ho«rs pastiag labels on the pack- ages. Amusing scene—An amusing scene was witnessed on the battle field ef Moaoeacy. After the bat tle was over, and the Yankees had lied, leaving their dead and wounded upon the field, a wounded soldier of the Federal army ap pealed to a chaplain in our ser vice for assistance and a draught of water. The chaplain very promptly gave him water, and was rendering him assistance, when an Irishman belonging to Hay’s Louisiana battalion, passing along, asked the chaptain what he was doing. “Relieving this poor fel low,” said he, “who is badly wounded.” “Leave here, ye spal peen,” replied the Irishman, “get a musket and go to wo^k, and don’t be after trying to bring the devils too afther we’ve kilt them.’ It’s Duration.
