Md., de clared that “the sixteen Southern States are to-day paying as much for the public schools as the British Parliament votes every year for the public school system of the British Islands— between twenty and thirty millions of dollars.” Since the civil war. he says, the S#uth has expended “two hundred and fifty millions of dollars of its own money for education—seventy-five millions of it for the children of the colored pe« >ple. This is a fact for the English Anti-Lynching Society to consider when it composes its customary screed against the South. When the foreign society lias spent a tenth of that sum in advising against the out rages that cause lynchings its title to speak will have been better es tablished- Its animus appears in its disposition to slander Southern women rather than to urge the candidates for lynching to let them alone.
