The beating of the innumerable lit tle square pieces of gold which are used to cover domes and sign*, and so on, forms a listinct industry iu th« gold trade which employs a large num ber of hands and requires no small amount of skill. The long, low building in which the work is carripd on is filled throughout the day with the sound of hummers. On every side little boxes containing tiny rolls of gold art to be seen, which, although only measuring an inch and a half In length, are each'worth about $50. The gold isreee»v«*d ia bars pne- fhetrin thickhesfh un inch in width and weighing 21 » penny weights. This is rolled out into a ribbon thirty vards in length. It is then given to the workmen in strips measuring seven yards, each of which is cut into 180 pieces. These are now ready to be bea f en out by hand. They arc placed (protected by tine skins) in a tool known as the clutch, and are thoroughly pounded out on a great granite block set iu the ground in such a way that there is ab solutely no vibratory movements. The process is repeated several times, the gold as it spreads being continu ally subdivided until it is of the exact dimensions required. The skins in which the gold is beat en aro so delicate that they will tear as easily as paper, nevertheless they are of so fine a quality that they will with stand the continual hammering for several years. The gold, which is fin ally beaten down to 20i),000th of an inch, is rnbbod with “brine” before being placed in the skins, in order that it shall not adhere to them. Easy as this work of beating out the gold may seem, it is in reality an art of a very delicate description. The workman must know to a nicety pre cisely how hard or gentle the blows of his hammer must be, aud a<so the exact spot on which they should fall. Accordingly, a very superior class of men are employed in the business. — Pearson’s Weekly. A Monster Musical Ins! rumen I. The most gigantic harp ever con structed, as far us the record goes, v.us that made by Veritan, tho provost of Barkli, near Basel, Switzerland, in 1787. That was a long while ago, but the fame of M. Veritan’s gigantic harp was such that it is still occasionally mentioned by writers on the rare and wonderful, just as the sea serpent, bloody rain, live mastodons, etc., are. M. Veritan’s colossal mnsical instru ment was 320 feet m length, and on that acconnt was constructed m an open lot instead of in a harp factory. It was mo«t simple in construction, consisting of filteen wires strung tightly between two poles. These wires wore of different sizes, the largest being one-sixth of an inch in diameter, aud the smallest one-twelfth of an inch. They were stretched north and sonth, and inclined in such a manner as to form an angle of from twenty to thirty degrees with the horizon. This queer instrument was not intended cs an exaggerated toy, bnt was constructed for the express purpose of foretelling changes in the weather, which were calculated by Professor Veritan according to the different tones tho instrument made when the wind was blowing through it. _________ A 8t.
