There are too many who borrow the paper and probably enjoy reading it all the more inasmuch as it costs them nothing.—Sumter Item. Health officer Husbands is enforcing the hog law by arresting all who are keeping pigs or hogs in violation of the health ordinance. If there are any others in the city who have pigs or hogs they had better re move them from the city limits or else he will have them arrested and fined. Abbeville, March 12. — Last night the people ot this city wer*. treated to souiethiug great in th • shape of a lecture. Dr. S. A. Steel ot Nashville, Ttiiu., iu his delightful “Dixie During the War,” entertained a large and at tentive audience for over two hours. The lecture wa* brim full of amusem jut and it was elevat ing, instructive, refined aud chaste in every particular. Those dear old days oi long ago were told of iu beautiful and touching lan guage. The incidents of the late war and the bravery of those who were left at h ime was rehearsed and the speaker profoundly im pressed all his hearers with the sufferings that the brave southern people went through. His description of the garden spot of the world—“Dixie"—was frequently interrupted by bursts of applause, as was his beautiful eulogy of that noblest type of the opposite sex—“a southern wo- mau.” * * * Give us Dr. Steel, of Nashville, every time, for his wit is never surpassed and his pathos touches deep.—The State. Dr. Steel will lecture iu this city next Wednesday night ou the “Pioneers of Methodism.” This lecture is something great also. He will speak at the Methodist church. He said the chief matter of business was the proper expenditures of the income of the college. Another matter of great interest to the taxpayers was the determi- tiou cf the Board to return to the! State $10,000 which the College drsw over the appropriation a year or two ago. The appropriation was for $26,000 but for some cleri cal error it was made $35,(XX). The extra $10,000 was used but will now be returned. Thecollego will not lack for the sinews of war this year. Already the privilege tax amounts to between $49,000 and $50,000.
