Williams, our tonsn- rial artist, spent Sunday in Mar ion. Messrs. W. H. Malloy and J. F. Muldrow went up to Wilmington this morning on a business trip. In about a week there will be a three night attraction. Further announcements will be made later. Our farmers are way behind in preparing their lands for planting on account of the continued rains. There is a camp of gypsy horse traders and fortune tellers about a half mile up the C. & D. Railroad. Mr. Armstrong Howard, a prom- nent merchant And farmer of Ef fingham, was in the city this morn ing. The weekly meeting of the Ep- worth League will be held in the Methodist Church to-night at 8 o’clock. The intermediate examination is now in progress in the Graded schools and will continue through this week. Messrs. T. E Sligh and L. M. Norment and Miss Maggie Jones, of Darlington, were registered at the Central last night. Mr. Harry Staunard, who has been taking a preparatory course of study in West Point, has re turned home. He will enter the United States Military Academy, West Point, in June. Don’t forget the meeting in the court house to-night at 8 o’clock for the purpose of organizing a young men’s club in connection with the coming election of Mayor and Aldermen for this city R. J. Rogers and David Mitchell who were arrested Saturday for fighting ou McCall & Jones’ lot, were tried by the Mayor this morning. Rogers was released and MitchMl was fined 53 or given six days ou the chain gang. A sheet printed on one side is sent out to-day, but through no fault of the management. The week’s supply of paper, which should have been in the depot this morning, failed to arrive, and it is therefore either this or nothing. The following record breaking run was made Saturday morning March 6th by train No. 37, vesti bule, W. & W. engine 153, L. Wakesmith engineman, G. D. Pugh, conductor; actual running time from South Rock Mount to Florence 196 minutes, time lost by stops 22 minutes, actual running time 174 minutes, average speed from South Rocky Mount to F lor- ence 59.3 miles per hour. Mrs. Mary Ann Morse died yes- | terday morning at 9 o’clock at the residence of her brother Mr. J. B. Burch near this city. Several years ago she had the misfortune to sustain serious injuries from an attack of an infuriated cow which came near proving fatal. Since that time she had never recovered health, though at times she seemed to be much improved. She leaves a host of relatives to mourn her death. The funeral services were hfdd at Ebenezer Baptist Church this morning at 12 o’clock, Rev. J. I. Ayers officiating. The inter ment took place at the Ebenezer i burying grouud. Attention Votem, There will be a mass meeting of the voters of the City of Florence at the Court House at 8 o’clock, p. m., Monday the 8th, instant. The purpose of this meeting is to organize a young men’s club in connection with the coming elec tion of Mayor and Councilman. It is unneccessary to urge a full attendance on this very important occasion. Let every one come pre pared to advance his opinions on the various subjects to be aired. North Carolina is making com mendable progress in the building of good roads. Thirty counties have levied a general road tax, and from the considerable sum thus realized the construction of permanent roads goes steadily ou. Other counties in the State are using their couvicts to great ad vantage in road work, and where- ever one goes now in the State ev idences of first class roud improve ments are to he seeu,l It is an nounced also that popular senti ment in favor of the work grows as the good roads lengthen out. To the Editor of The Dally Times: Having been solicited hy a num ber of friends who have the best interests of Florence at hea r t, I respectfully announce to the citi zens of Florence, through the col umns of your paper, that I am a candidate for the office of Mayer. I wish to state emphatically, that I am not a candidate of any particular party or faction, and that I am not offering myself on any particular issue, but my plat form is, as it always has been, for good government, low taxation, economy, good roads, a proper, just and equal assessment on all real and personal property, enforce ment of the laws, and special privileges to hone. I claim to have the interests of Florence at heart, being a tax payer and property owner, and, if elected, my endeavors shall all be cente/ed on the upbuilding of Florence. My record as an alderman for the past three years stands for it self, and, if the line of policy as indicated above, is what the citi zens of Florence desire, I ask for their suffrage at the coming elec tion. London, March 7.—A dispatch to the Central News from Athens gives the following summary of the reply to the ultimatum of the powers which Greece will hand to the diplomats to-morrow wheu the time expires iu which a reply can he made. It will recall that Greece iu 1896 iu deference to the wish of the powers, used her influence with the Cretans to induce them to ac cept reforms offered by Turkey. It will point out that the continued unsettled state of the island is proof of the futility of the meas ures of reform. With regard to the autonomy of the island, the reply will state that it is for the Cretans to decide whether they will accept it or not It will declare that the evacuation of Crete hy Greece is impossible because peace, to restore which Greek troops and warships were to the island, remains seriously disturbed. London, March 7.—The Daily News will to-morrow claim to he able to announce that there is every hope of a speedy, satisfac tory and peaceful solution of the Cretau trouble. General Supt. Russell Harding of the Great Northern, has just come ia from North Dakota and says he never saw anything like the quantity of snow up there. He said: “I think I would be very conservative indeed in estimating the snow as being three feet on a level out on the plains. It is pro bably nearer 4 feet on a level. Now that is a trememdous quantity of snow when one thinks of the vast area it covers- And it is not all down yet, as telegrams received this afternoon indicated another snow storm.” Asked concerning the snow in the mountains, Mr. Harding said it had surpassed all previous re cords. In many places it was far over the tops of the telegraph poles, and so deep that the rotary plow could do little better than cut a tunnel rather than swath. There is so much snow on the ground that there is grave fear of floods both in the Mississippi and Red river valleys. Everything de pends on the temperature of the next 10 days. Canea, March 9.—It is believe here that the reply of Greece to the demands of the powers will be a positive refusal to obey and that a bloody struggle is therefore in evitable unless the powers recede from their position. It is known that Col. Vassos, the commander of the Greek army of occupation, has received instructions from King George to hold all the posi tions in the island now occupied hy the Greek troops aud to pre pare to resist to the bitter end any attempt on the part of anybody to dislodge him. Kradutreel’g Review of Trade for the Week Just Ended, New York, March 5.—Brad- streec’s says: The new ad ministration, the certainty of an extra session ef congress within a fortnight and the promise of a new tariff at an early day which shaH provide adequate rev enue aud protection, have done much to stimulate a better feeling in trade circles and increase con fidence in the near approach of an improvement in business. Total clearings at 74 cities for February aggregated $3,668,716,266, a de crease of 17.8 per cent, from the January total and 10.2 per cent, from that for February a year ago. Geuoral trade has been interfered with by rain, high water in the Ohio valley and snow iu the north western spring wheat States. South Atlautio and Gulf cities have had some better weather with the merchandise movement equal to expectatious. At Chicago and St. Louis there has been a marked increase in the volume of purchase from jobbers, both by interior merchants in person and by mail orders, yet it is probable that the total trade at neither city equals sonal peculiarities. From a relig ious standpoint the senate showed l|ip ri Methodists, seven Baptists, ne Catholic, one Israelite, three piscopalians, two Associate Re- tormed Presbyterians, four Presby terians, six with “inclinations” to certain denominations and one Second Adventist—Sentaor Du Bose, who is a minisier as well as a farmer. ^ The president is he only “journalist” in the body. The farmers control, there being 21 of them. 1 wo of these are, however ako merchants and two ministers. There are thirteen lawyers in the body and Dr. Williams is the only physician. In the house the Methodists hold sway ; there are 39 of them, the Baptists taking second place with 31. It is a curious fact that out of the large body only 12 are put down as having “inclinations.” The Associate Reformed Presby terian faith has four representatives and there are four members of the Christian church. There is in this body, as in the senate, one Second Adventist. There are 83 mem bers who are engaged in farming. Some of them are physicians and merchants also and one is also en gaged in preaching.
