The people of this State are long-suffering and kind, but they don’t want to be taxed to death. One of the most difficult things in the world is to properly grade tax licenses. The members of the legislature should know this. They should consider carefully the bill upon this subject, and to do this will take time—more time than they can give to it before adjourn, ment. We hope they will either kill the bill without debate or post pone it until the next session. The appropriation bill calls for a State levy of 5 mills, the cousti tutional levy is 3 mills, and the levy for ordinary purposes in this county is 3£ mills, making a total of 11^ mills. Add to this the reg ular city tax levy, and the muni cipal license tax, and some idea may be gleaned of the amount of taxes some of our population have to pay. Hut the legislature would crowd on more. The members thereof surely do not think that our people are beasts of burden. It may be true that the special license tax as imposed on occupa tions and various kinds of busi ness by a bill introduced in the house last Saturday is not partic ularly burdensome, when con sidered by itself but at the same time it is altogether wrong. It is unjust and discriminative in that the licenses are not properly graded, and it fails to reach a large class who grow cotton, corn, to bacco, etc., who raiso beaf cattle, hogs, chickens, ete , who m many instances use machinery for va rious purposes, and who are now allowed by law to sell their pro duce in towns without paying the license required of regular deal ers,—viz., farmers. The house bill providing sepa rate coaches for white and colored passengers which is unfavorably reported passed to a third reading. It will be debated next week. The finance committee has amended the appropriation bill by making a general increase in the provisions. The most important items are those relating to the South Carolina college and the Citadel. The committee amend meuts increase these appropria tions, the former to $25,000 with $3,000 for sewerage; the latter to $21,500, the $1,600 being for the purpose of repairs. Gen. Farley is given $500 additional for the purpose of completing the Confed erate rolls. The clerk’s salaries are generally restored to the amount provided in the original committee bill. The said land is said to contain five (6) acres, more or less. ALSO All that certain piece, parcel or tract •f land lying, being and situate in county of Florence and State of South Carolina, containing one hundred and forty (140) acres more or less,described and hounded as follows, viz.: north by lands of Peter Burton, and S. M. Benton, east by lands of George W. Matthews, south by the public road leading'from the George town road to the Charleston road, and west by lands of W. J. Fitzean and A. J.
